In this age and time technology have really gone a long way, in the 60's I don't think there was anything like a smartphone, according to my research we got cell phones in the the 90's, I know before then there would have been a way to pass information and other stuff to friends and relatives this is what they did then.
Now explaining how a smartphone works to an elderly person from the 60's would be a very difficult task to some extent I think, I know how explaining how to use a smartphone to my mum went, though she was very eager to learn about the function, I even got to open social media accounts for her, I took my time, I know the task requires a lot of patience and time and also not to be rude also, or to laugh when they make a funny statement, just like my mum had, she had asked if operating the phone for like 5 hours could make the phone blow up as she noticed it does get hot when it's in use, I had to explain that the smartphone is a device that would need it reat time too, just like a human but not that it could blow up because it got hot
After I said this to her, she didn't ask for anything anymore. She was always operating the smartphone by herself and also she was able to access the internet and even she could use google.
But one time an old man approached me and asked me to help him recharge his phone,, as he didn't know how to so I showed him the ways to and even showed him the screen while I was doing thi, I started pointing the keys he needed to click on so he could recharge, so he doesn't have to give his phone to someone else to do so, after I had left him and went home, in my mind that I have thought someone something.
Well the man didn't learn, I still saw him while walking down my street to see that he was with some people and they were explaining the same thing I had explained to him just two days ago, well I didn't bother myself again and just walked by.
So I will say this, explaining how a smartphone works can be stressful, dreadful, especially to the older folks. They need patience, time and also they need attention so they can easily learn what you are trying to teach them on the smartphone
One thing I know is everyone wants to make use of the smartphone both the elderly and little ones. It takes only those who are ready to learn to be able to get things shown on the phone to them.
And there are some elderly persons that don't need any explaining they already know what to with a smartphone, everyone way of learning g is different and so there's always ways or approaches to do things.
