Hello everyone and welcome to week 47, edition 1, of the Hive Learners Contest.
Since my mother was into preparing pastries, I became interested in baking when I was still in primary school. Unlike my sisters, who were only interested in eating, I was pretty interested in it.
I spent some time living with my aunt, who was a baker, because I became more interested in it as I got older and thought I could succeed in it. As much as I was interested in baking and pastry making, I wasn't yet at the level I wanted to be when my aunt started giving me duties to complete. I did the batter preparations and occasionally assisted with designing and huge cake orders.
Later, I enrolled in a catering class that covered all aspects of catering. We learned a ton of information from the program because it was structured like a school day. The training lasted for a year, and throughout that time we completed a lot of practicals, mostly involving mixing batters. We didn't do any designing, which is something I still feel like I need to learn more about. I continued on and enrolled in a cake studio after finishing my studies at the catering school. The woman was really skilled at what she did, so I requested that she train me in decorating for a fee. She agreed, and I was still able to gain additional information that wasn't covered in our training program.
She gave me an assignment to do after two weeks of learning: design a client's cake. Though it was a very simple cake, I still think I didn't do well enough at the time, but she told me it was okay, she commented well on the cake, and even the customer didn't complain, so I had peace of mind.
I had the chance to bake a cake by myself. I had to utilize a local baking method as I didn't have an oven, and it took me two days to create the cake for my mother's birthday (I wish I still had a photo of it on my phone). My mother was so pleased with the cake when I gave it to her that she requested that the celebration of her cake cutting take place outside the premises so that everyone could see the cake I baked for her..
I can't say I'm a perfect baker now, but I have improved. I still accept orders from clients, who always seem to enjoy the cakes.
I've even contacted a cake company to inquire about pure cake craft and design classes so I can continue to get better at what I'm doing.
We all know that learning new things takes time. During the year I will be out of school, when we are required to complete our industrial training, I plan to take a course in cake decorating so that I may classify myself as a perfectionist.
That makes sense, huh? I guess I'm a little bit good, but I don't want to brag about myself when I know there are other bakers who are better than me.
