I have always seen coding to be cool, I wish I could give computers instructions, but in their own language; that's why when I watch these movies where coders are called nerds by some dumb kids, I am like—what the hell? Aren't you supposed to be jealous of this ‘nerd,’ like you don't know the power they have? I used to see coding as a superpower sometimes, just like how wizards have magic spells; yeah, it's the same thing as coders knowing how to use computer language.
You know what? I am 100% sure that if I had access to understanding coding at a young age, I would have taken that path.
Sometimes I imagine I could code, and it genuinely feels great just imagining.
Now, forget the many pros of coding; I mean, coding will control the world in, let's say, 50 years to come; I don't know, but what I know is that if given a chance, coding would dominate the world.
Have you ever tried to open a website, and it crashed? Yeah, blame that on bad coding.
Like coding is already taking over, it's not just phones and websites anymore; we have codes written by great minds for fridges, cars, smart buildings, and who knows, maybe if you knew everything in the world, then almost everything has a coded version.
So should every kid learn to code in school?
Well, I wouldn't say learning as in learning. At least you can introduce it to them, and make it more fun. I bet if the class was given all the resources and knowledge to code a game as an assignment, they would love it; who wouldn't like it? If I had the chance to go back and have a choice I would switch Christian religious knowledge for a coding course.
I feel like I had so much time in my early life, time I could have used to achieve something, and coding is one of them.
And introducing coding to kids won't only benefit those choosing the coding path, it makes one's mind sharp and boosts creativity and even patience.
Starting to learn coding from small is quite helpful as young minds are quick and sharp, and also have less to think about.
I tried using Python to learn coding at 100 level in university, and at some point, I told myself, “If I continued at this rate, I would drop out if I didn't run mad first," lol.
So you get it? Coding should be given an equal chance like every other subject in the early stage of education. Kids should have a choice on whatever they want to become and coding isn't exempted.
Actually, in Nigeria, coding is now like a gem because coders earn a lot of zeros.
If only I could code, I have so many game ideas I wish I could bring to life.
Apart from all the fun things I would do or could code, coding isn't just the future anymore; it is now our daily life, and it will grow bigger and better in the future.
So yeah, let’s teach kids how to code — it’s not just the future, it’s the now.
