The devil has a diversity of operations — and this is why the Bible sternly warns us: “Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11). One of the most subtle tools he uses today is depression. Though it may appear less intense than full demonic possession, depression can be equally dangerous to the soul if not handled with spiritual wisdom and intentionality.
Depression thrives in the absence of light — and God's Word is that light. When a believer neglects the A, B, C of faith — Agreeing, Believing, and Confessing God’s Word consistently — depression can slowly take root. It often starts small: a bad thought, a disappointment, a loss, or a season of loneliness. But when left unchecked, these emotional wounds can become spiritual strongholds.
Attitude matters. You can begin to win the battle against depression by embracing the right attitude toward life and situations. Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. That renewal comes from daily fellowship with God and aligning our thoughts with His truth.
The Bible gives us further direction in Proverbs 4:23:
"Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of life."
And again in Colossians 3:16:
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..."
When you neglect the Word, you are like a soldier without a weapon. Satan then begins to attack your joy of salvation, your sense of worth, and your confidence in God's promises. He aims to render the Word of God ineffective in your life — not by force, but by subtle deception. Just as he approached Eve in the garden with twisted words — “Did God really say...?” — he still questions God’s truth in your heart today.
Do not let him succeed.
Stay alert. Saturate yourself with the Word. Speak the promises of God over your life. Depression may seem like a mild storm at first, but left unattended, it becomes a flood. But God has given us the way of escape — His presence, His Word, and His Spirit.
Take back control. Refuse to give room to the enemy. Fight depression with the truth, and you’ll reclaim the joy of your salvation.
