While I had not planned to continue my trip in the Cafayate area of Salta, I was not complaining about having to do so. Like any little town on the side of Route 40, this place has its charm and although it is small, there are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area. I had already visited it for an afternoon a few years ago, but this time I would have two weeks to enjoy it. When I'm out and about, my favourite thing to do is to go out and explore nature, and that's what I did most of the time. That's how I got to know the area of the dunes, which I didn't even know existed in this part of my country, Argentina 😃.
Si bien no tenía planeado continuar mi viaje en la zona de Cafayate en Salta, tampoco me quejé de tener que hacerlo. Como todo pueblito al costado de la ruta 40, este lugar tiene su encanto y aunque es pequeño, hay un montón de cosas que se pueden hacer en los alrededores. Yo ya lo había visitado durante una tarde hace algunos años, pero esta vez tendría dos semanas para disfrutarlo. Cuando estoy de paseo lo que más me gusta es salir a explorar la naturaleza, y eso fue lo que más hice en todo ese tiempo. Así fue como conocí la zona de los médanos, que ni sabía que existían en esta parte de mi país Argentina 😃.
When you think of sand in Argentina, you think of the Atlantic Ocean coast, which is where we have all our beaches. But on this trip I discovered that there are sandy areas on the other side of the Andes Mountains. My first approach to this kind of sandy landscape was when I came across the Duna La Ballena, in Catamarca, just a week before I had to move to Cafayate. When I arrived at this new place, I was told that there was also an area of sand dunes, so I wanted to go and see what it was all about 😃.
Cuando uno piensa en arena en Argentina, se imagina la zona de la costa del Océano Atlántico, que es donde tenemos todas nuestras playas. Pero en este viaje descubrí que hay zonas con arena también al otro lado, al costado de la Cordillera de los Andes. Mi primer acercamiento con este tipo de paisajes arenosos fue cuando conocí la Duna La Ballena, en Catamarca, apenas una semana antes de tener que moverme a Cafayate. Al llegar a este nuevo lugar, me dijeron que también existía una zona de médanos así que quise ir a ver de qué se trataba 😃.
The problem was that the sand dunes area was about 8 km from the centre of the village, so it was necessary to go by car. My co-worker at the hostel and I had planned to hitchhike the dunes that day, something I don't like to do alone, but if I am with someone else it seems a bit safer. Luckily for us, that day a Dutch guest arrived at the hostel where we both worked and as he had a car, he offered us a lift. It was the end of August and that day was the beginning of my travelling romance with this guy, which lasted until the end of December, so I remember this afternoon with a lot of affection 💕.
El problema era que la zona de los médanos quedaba a unos 8 km del centro del pueblo, por lo que era necesario ir en vehículo. Mi compañera de trabajo en el hostel y yo habíamos planeado ir ese día a conocer los médanos haciendo dedo, algo que a mi no me gusta hacer en solitario pero que si estoy con alguien me parece un poco más seguro. Para nuestra suerte, ese día llegó un huésped holandés al hostel en el que ambas trabajábamos y como tenía auto, se ofreció a llevarnos. Era fines de agosto y ese día fue el inicio de mi romance viajero con ese chico, el cual se extendió hasta fines de diciembre, por lo que recuerdo esta tarde con mucho cariño 💕.
This sandy area was very interesting, representing a large amount of accumulated sand surrounded by the mountains. They were not very high, so you could reach the top with just a short walk. The only negative was that it was quite windy and the dust was blowing everywhere, which made you get dirty almost obligatory. But it didn't matter because we were like three little kids playing there, we even rolled down the dune 😂.
Esta área arenosa era muy interesante, representaba una gran cantidad de arena acumulada rodeada de las montañas. No tenían gran altura, por lo que se podía llegar hasta la cima con solo una pequeña caminata. Lo único negativo era que había bastante viento y el polvo volaba por todos lados, lo que te hacía ensuciarte casi obligatoriamente. Pero no importaba porque nosotros éramos como tres chicos pequeños jugando ahí, incluso nos tiramos rodando por la duna 😂.
We stayed on the sand dunes spending the afternoon and drinking some wine until sunset. Afterwards, the three of us went back to the hostel together and after a deep bath because the amount of sand we had on top of us was incredible, we went out for a walk in the Cafayate night. Another thing that distinguishes this town, besides the good local wine production, are the folkloric peñas. These are shows with live singers and musicians performing local music. It is a very good plan to have dinner while watching one of these shows, so it was a very entertaining end to the day ❤️.
Nos quedamos en los médanos pasando la tarde y tomando un poco de vino hasta que llegó el atardecer. Después, volvimos los tres juntos al hostel y después de un baño bien profundo porque la cantidad de arena que teníamos encima era increíble, salimos a pasear un poco en la noche cafayateña. Otra cosa que distingue a este pueblo, además de la buena producción local de vinos, son las peñas folclóricas. Estos son shows con cantantes y músicos en vivo, que interpretan música local. Es un muy buen plan cenar algo mientras se presencia un show de esos, así que fue un cierre del día muy entretenido ❤️.
This whole day was very entertaining from start to finish, and it was during dinner that the Dutch boy invited me to go for a walk the next day, but this time it was just the two of us. At that time I was still naive about his intentions, but I accepted because I always like to have outings and cultural exchanges with people from other countries. That day I didn't imagine everything that was going to happen afterwards, but I'm glad how it all turned out. In the end I was grateful for the idea of going for a walk in the sand dunes and the perfect timing of meeting in the right place: these are the kind of anecdotes I like to have ❣️.
Todo este día fue muy entretenido de principio a fin, y durante la cena fue que el chico holandés me invitó a pasear al otro día, pero esta vez solo nosotros dos. En ese momento yo todavía estaba ingenua respecto a sus intenciones, pero acepté porque siempre me gusta tener salidas a pasear e intercambios culturales con personas de otros países. Ese día no me imaginaba todo lo que iba a pasar después, pero me alegra cómo se fue dando todo. Al final terminé agradeciendo la idea de querer ir a pasear a los médanos y a todo el timing perfecto de encontrarnos en el lugar justo: estos son el tipo de anécdotas que me gusta tener ❤️.
