Hello all, here is a little video I produced and directed with my friend Jordan Balentine. He has gone on to do better things with the BBC and yet here still am I rolling in the sand. Jordan had heard about an online competition by a company called BabySkip to make a video about what you could do with a BabySkip. These bags are usually a simple solution if you want to dump something like a dead body which wouldn't fit in your normal bin but we wanted to try something different.
The bag itself is exactly the same as what I sometimes get sand delivered in when I am doing a smaller sculpture and this challenge made me think about it in another way. About actually using it to make the sculpture.
Jordan is a very smart and thought that we could also kill too birds with one stone and maybe make a pilot for a Youtube Channel we were knocking around called 'The invention Show'. Our presenter, Ashling Bodkin explains the concept during the video. Actually, the video explains pretty much everything so just go watch it.
To cheat or not to cheat?
As for the competition, The rules were which ever video got the most views when it was uploaded to The Youtubes would be the winner. We watched all the other videos and ours was for sure the best but we could start to see certain patterns happening on the view count of the other videos. The feckers were auto refreshing their own videos. We researched the very simple software they we obviously using and thought about running the same thing on ours and all our friend's computers. But that would not prove anything, except who the biggest cheater was so, we took it straight to the top and told the BabySkip company that the competition was being gamed and that they should think of another metric to Judge the videos. They were pretty pissed off with the proof we provided and decided that instead finding another way they would just cancel the whole thing so nobody won. We probably should have keep our mouths shut and gone the cheating route.
Anyway, that's the story behind this video. I really like the idea even though we never pushed it on any further. I would like to see a show like that. Maybe as 3Speak gets bigger I could put it into action. As regards the using the Baby-Skip or any tonne bag for that matter as a way to compact sand I think I will be using that again. It's so simple and means a very easy cleanup on the smaller jobs.
