Usually I'm not too keen on sharing the process of my work with the "world". Not because it's secret of something, but ... you know... it's like getting naked in public. Essentially there's nothing wrong with it, it just makes you hesitate and think: why the heck would I do that?
Creation proces
In this animation, the entire painting process takes place in 9 seconds and in 6 steps. In reality, it was more like 6 days in about a month that I worked on the painting, or just stared at it...
I call the work a painting because the first five steps were done with acrylic paint on paper. Only the last step is digital. But because the end result has both painting elements and digital layers, you could also call it mixed media.
As you might notice, I did not start the painting with a preconceived plan. I had set myself the goal of painting a portrait, but otherwise it emerged from the painting process itself.
Only in the last two steps did I have a clear picture of what I wanted to achieve and I worked effectively towards the end result.
Painting
"I'm a mean motherfucker" is a portrait from my recent series of works about strong emotions and facial expressions. In some cases it is a self-portrait, but just as often they are completely imaginary persons.
An impressive and intimidating personality
The use of large light-dark contrasts, in combination with a strong geometric division of the plane, contribute to the strong expression of this painting.
The clear composition and the eyes that largely disappear into the shadows are intimidating to the viewer. The close-up composition also contributes greatly to this.
Despite the use of warm colors, you get convinced: he's a mean, mean ...
Digital technique
To circumvent the limitations that digital pixel based artworks have, I’ve created this portrait as a (infinitely) scalable vector graphic. This means it can be scaled without losing its razor sharp definition.
The edition on sale here has a size of 11865 x 16666 pixels, which is ample to print in high quality - 300 dpi - on 40”x 55” (100 x 140 cm). The file is in JPG-format.
For sale as a NFT-art
I sell my digital work as "rare digital art" (NFT's) in a limited edition on Makersplace.com. Take a look at my store, or go directly to this page to bid on this work.
Since the gas price for publication on the ether blockchain is consistently high lately, it may take considerable time for the work to be available for sale. If you run out of patience, don't hesitate to contact me; we can always try to speed things up!
