I got this job sometime back and it kinda entails converting traditional art to digital. I mean I'd be making a whole lot of them and this is like legitly my first. My cousin @stephennevets handled the traditional part and he is just about concluding it. I thought to start mine and truthfully, I didn't want to go beyond the outline today but then, something led to another and I found myself in a position where completion seemed feasible. I really went for it.
What happened? So @yanga introduced me to a style of art where I overlay the picture with block of related colours with a hard brush and then proceed to smudge. It was quite intriguing and I promised to give it a try. I would have gone for my normal shading here but I believed his style would give me a more 3 dimensional look. So after outlining, I was like.. Okay let's give this a trail and error and then I'll probably quit and continue later.. Yeah, that led to this...
I wanted to use something more hard but then I don't know what prompted me to click on the paint Splatter brush. I tried it and I smudged it and the outcome was inspiring..not totally though. I haven't seen it anywhere so it was just a new ball game for me with that kind of brush combination. I continued with ("oh I'll delete when it looks absolutely horrendous") at the back of my mind.
Interestingly, the more I continued, the more I grew into it and the more I was willing to see it through. It was quite challenging. I created a whole lot of useless color palettes and I ended up using two - mainly. I don't know how to create my group of related colours perfectly.
The description of the character was a fair one and I was already drifting off track.. The traditional art had a lot of conspicuous shadows which I tried to represent properly but that just tilted my complexion towards the dark side. I got stuck between maintaining the balance and creating a semblance of what was on paper. Luckily, with the things I learnt from smudge Art, I was able to adjust the tone of the complexion through some layer blending and color mixes. Wasn't so obvious but at least it is something.
This is my first of this type of artwork and you'll see more in the coming days because I'm not done painting yet. I hope to see how I grow better in the nearest future.
OK let me drop these three comparisons
The first is the plain trad drawing. While the other is the rough sketch mixed with the digital art. It kinda gives this sketchy look which I like. I also had to reduce her neck... Her name is LOLA
