HELLO EVERYONE
Today I will be taking you guys to 2016, 2016 was the year I came out of retirement to pick my pencil again. Growing up as a child with a gift of art in my system, every single member of my family thought I will study art in school, but they were all surprised seeing me do well in the science department. 2012, I was about leaving for the university to study Computer Science and that was the year I told myself, I just want to concentrate on my studies, no distractions, so I stopped drawing. Going through Facebook in 2016 (which was my final year in school), I came across a drawing by an artist from France, right there, I receive that call to get back to my art, I told myself a part of me has been missing all this while.
So, I started my research, because I told myself, even though I can draw naturally, I need to develop myself, I want to be a professional. I purchased some art books so I can self study each one, I downloaded a lot of art videos and also bought some art materials. The first year of coming out of retirement, all I did was freehand sketches and all this I did on a plain drawing book, because I was teaching myself how to love the pencil again rather than pressing it so hard to the paper. I was teaching myself so many art principles, this was a new school for me, but this time, the voice in my head was my teacher.
Same 2016, I decided to upgrade my drawing book after mastering how not to press the pencil, I bought a sketchbook, an A4 size sketchbook, the paper of the sketch book was rough, and I love it, because I was about teaching myself how to control my shading. The ability to control the look of your work with your shading is a great skill, this I told myself I must master. I still use this type of sketchbook till date, because it help me push myself more.
So, the first freehand sketch I did after the purchase of my sketchbook was this drawing. A drawing of Mark Sinclair professionally known as Vin Diesel. Vin Diesel happen to be an American actor, producer, director and screenwriter. He is best known for playing Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise, and this man happen to be one of my favourite male Actors.
It was really nice working on this, because back then I was still exploring different materials until I will find the once to settle with. I did this work with just graphite pencil on an A4 sized sketchbook. I did some manipulation on the head, because my references picture, the head was not complete so I just have to get creative.
2016 was the year so many things changed for me, that was the year I saw greatness and I saw it in a man's art. I told myself, I want to be able to bring out greatness from my art just like the man did, and I set a goal for myself, and I have never stopped reaching for that goal. Thanks for staying with me on this journey back to 2016, I really hope you love it? Well, see you next Thursday on Throwback on a Thursday.
