Welcome to the first lesson of the intermediate series, where we will talk about Lichess, an online platform, and how to use it. Lichess is an open-source platform that allows chess players to play online anonymously or with their created account. The platform is solely run by a non-profit organization with the same name (Lichess), and when I say it is open-sourced, I mean it is free to create an account and use all its features. Unlike its counterpart, chess.com comes with a subscription mode for certain features. I highly recommend using Lichess if you are new to the world of online chess. Also, donations can be made to Lichess as a means of supporting the platform. Do not forget Lichess is also available on the Google Play and App Store for mobile devices. Getting started on Lichess is very simple.
To create an account on the platform, click on the SIGN IN button. A page will open asking for your username and password. But since you do not have one, just click on REGISTER. Then you create your username and password, agree to the terms of fair play, and then register. Your account will be created, and you can move over to your email inbox to verify your email address.
On this page, you will see the quick pairing section along with lobby and correspondence. Quick pairing is for getting a fast game to play within the given time control. Lobby is where you go to when you want to see games that have been created by anonymous users. And the last one, Correspondence, is where you go to if you want to play games that can last for a couple of days. Aside from scrolling on the site, the navbar section at the top of the site, filled with the words PLAY, PUZZLES, LEARN, WATCH, COMMUNITY, TOOLS, and DONATE, is another way to move around the website. This section is where you go to if you want to play, create a game, play an arena or swiss tournament, and lastly participate in a simultaneous exhibition. When you hover on the play button with your cursor, a dropdown menu will aware showing these options.
This section is where you go to if you want to solve chess puzzles to sharpen your tactics and knowledge about the game. Also, when you hover over this section, a drop-down menu pops up showing the different kinds of chess puzzle games you can play. You can play puzzle where a random position will be displayed and you have to look for the best move to play, or you can play puzzle racer where you compete with other chess players, the player with the most puzzles solved wins.
This section is where you go to if you want to learn more about chess in areas like chess basics, practice, coordinates, learn more about your game, or hire a coach, depending on how committed you are to improving. It also comes with its dropdown menu as well showcasing all that is in that section.
This section has to do with watching other top players play against other top players. You can also follow up on any live chess tournament being played and watch the games as they are played live. This section is where I get follow-up super grandmaster games and other live tournaments.
This section is for players, different communities of other players, teams, forums, and blogs. If you want to join a team of chess players where you get to play certain tournaments or team events, or you want to read write-ups about chess and what is happening in the chess world, then this is your section.
This is the section for importing chess games you might have played on other platforms or over the board to analyse the game and see where you went wrong. This section also comes with an analysis board where you can set up a certain chess position and ask the computer to look for the best moves to help you spot them in case they come up in another game.
This section on the navbar has to do with donating to Lichess, which could be monthly or yearly. Then you get a patron icon placed by the side of your username.
You can join our The Blockchain Team on Lichess, created by @stayoutoftherz. https://lichess.org/team/the-blockchain-chess-team When approved, you will get to participate in the Hivechess tournament when the new season begins.
