About myself
My name is Oluwatobiloba Job , a student at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, currently in my final year studying Insurance at the faculty of Management science . I won’t say I love or hate school, as I merely do the needful to maintain my grades. Some of my favorite pastimes are; playing football, playing scrabble, watching movies and anime, listening to music, interacting and meeting new people. I also enjoy taking long walks and reading books.
Introduction to chess
I saw the game of chess for the first time in my life at my secondary school. I instantly fell in love with the game, as I was intrigued by how the pieces were moved. It was a subject in our school at that time and I quickly enrolled in the chess club and within that term, I became one of the best players in the school.
Representing my school was a great honor and it brought glory to the school. That was the start of my chess career.
My Junior years
I was invited to represent Lagos state at the National school sport festival ( NSSF ), hosted at Kwara State. I was first in the trail, as the best players from various schools were invited for the event.
The year after that, i was invited based on merit to play at the same competition, hosted by Benue State, and finished with a silver medal on my board, while my team secured a bronze.
The third year of my chess career, my school won the Lagos state sport festival at Teslim Balogun stadium at surulere where I won 2 golds and a silver medal. I won one of the most prestigious u20 tournaments in the country, even after a long absence in the game, beating the best juniors at the time.
I went on to play the junior National
Chess championship at Lagos and was tied 1st; a wonderful and the highest achievement a junior can ever hope to get.
I got to the highest level of junior chess and was one of the highest rated junior players in the country
I was extremely impressed and proud of myself.
University days
I got admission to the university of Lagos and that shifted my attention away from chess. I study insurance and want to get to the highest level professionally.
Getting to university, it was quite difficult to balance my promising running and my academics but now I’m back like I never left
Coach Tobi
Now I take my knowledge and impact the new generation. I want to teach and inspire the younger generation to learn and play the wonderful game. I have found another calling on a checkered board of 64 squares.
As a chess coach, I do more than teach a game. I help shape minds, build character, and inspire strategy. I have built confidence in the students I teach the wonderful game of chess.
In Conclusion
It has been a long and wonderful road. There are many things you can do to improve your quality of life and chess is one of them. As I continue on this journey, I remain grateful for the lessons I’ve learned, the people who’ve inspired me, and the opportunities that have shaped who I am.
Every step forward is fueled by curiosity, resilience, and a deep belief in growth. I may not know exactly what the future holds, but I’m excited to keep learning, evolving, and striving to make a meaningful impact—one day at a time whether it’s chess or something outside chess
