There is nothing that builds a person when it’s all a lie. Lies can’t shape us, it tries but it is just incapable of doing that, in the end it just destroys us. Most times we think we have to tell a lie to save ourselves or someone but there are other ways to do that but that’s the only easy way so it seemed like it was fine and even wise. Imagine just waking up one day to a whole new family, environment and everything you have ever known to realize that was now your new reality. Will you just accept everything or try to find out what is going on? I’m sure it’s the latter and that is because none of what we are experiencing at that moment feels real.
The truth is absolute, therefore it has the potential to shape us when we are confronted by it. Sadly, we live in a world where lying has become the normal practice and it feels too good when people seek for the truth. We most times even try to cover the truth because it reveals too much of us that we don’t wish to see and then we just settle for the lies we tell ourselves and others tell us too. The interesting thing about lie is that it never makes us feel uncomfortable as the truth makes us feel. We feel safe when we lie because we believe somehow that that’s how we will be saved from whatever we are facing.
The truth breaks you, because it reveals those part of you that you want hidden for as long as you live. Whereas the lie does the opposite. The lie makes you feel covered and shielded - more like a save haven for you to do whatever without being judged or caring about what others say and isn’t that what we all want? To have a safe space. The lie keeps us from growing because we telling lies most times mean we are not willing to genuinely change our ways that we know are not good. Or we somehow think we can do it all by ourselves only to realize that we can’t but we still find it hard to ask for help and because of that we just keep settling for the lies.
The truth hurts but it sets free. Knowing the truth is what can truly set you free. The lies keep you in bondage because you are always worried of the day you will be exposed because it’s definitely going to happen. Nothing can be hidden forever, especially secrets because the more you try to protect it, the more revealing it becomes. And this is why the truth sets you free. Accepting the truth which sets us free is what then shapes us into becoming better people. You become a puppet when you always hid behind a lie. That lie keeps hunting you until the day it disgraces you in a way that teaches you the importance of being truthful.
This is my response to the topic of discussion: Do you think people are more shaped by the truth they face or by the lies they believe?
