Friday was the closing ceremony for elementary and junior high schools.
My sons started their summer vacation yesterday. So, today we went to Kita-Senju as a family to hold a little “first semester well done” celebration.
The area around Kita-Senju Station is known as a sacred spot for “Senbero,” a vibrant and gritty drinking district full of lively energy. “Senbero” (pronounced Sen-be-ro) is Japanese slang for super affordable, fun drinking spots where you can get tipsy (berobero) for just 1,000 yen (about $7-10 USD, depending on exchange rates). Kita-Senju is practically the poster child for this culture.
Narrow alleys stretching from the backstreets of Kita-Senju Station are packed cheek by jowl with red-lantern izakayas and standing bars, bustling with people enjoying drinks even in the daytime. We didn’t go to a “Senbero” spot this time—instead, we went to “Shabu-yo,” a shabu-shabu restaurant my kids love—but those streets have a real gritty charm with lots of unique spots. I’d love to go drinking there sometime.
After heading home, I went to vote in the House of Councillors election. My workplace asked us to submit a “proof of voting” certificate, and getting one for the first time felt kind of refreshing.
Right now, I’m watching the election results on YouTube, and it looks like the ruling party is set to lose a ton of seats, which feels kind of satisfying to watch.
When one party keeps dominating everything, it feels like the voices of ordinary people don’t get heard…Like how all sorts of bars crowd together in Kita-Senju’s backstreets, I vaguely thought it’d be better if politics had a mix of different parties’ voices resonating together, too 😉

金曜日は小学校・中学校の終業式でした。
息子たちは昨日から夏休み。ということで、今日は家族で「一学期お疲れ様の会」をするため北千住まで行ってきました。北千住の駅周辺は、「せんべろ」の聖地として知られる、活気あふれるディープな飲み屋街が広がるエリアです。
「せんべろ」とは、1000円でベロベロに酔えるような、コスパ抜群の安くて楽しい飲み屋を指す日本のスラングですが、北千住はこの文化の象徴とも言える場所です。北千住駅前の裏通りに広がる狭い道には、赤ちょうちんの居酒屋や立ち飲み屋が所狭しと並び、昼間からお酒を楽しむ人々で賑わっていました。私たちが行ったのは「せんべろ」のお店ではなく、子供達が大好きな「しゃぶ葉」でしたが。この通りはディープというか、特徴的なお店が多いようで、いつか飲みに行ってみたいと思います。
一旦家に帰ってから、参議院選挙の投票に行きました。職場に「投票済み票」を提出するよう言われており、初めて受け取ったのでちょっと新鮮な気分です。今、YouTubeで開票速報を見ていますが、与党が大幅に議席を失いそうで、清々しい気分で眺めています。一つの党がずっと牛耳っていると、庶民の声が届きにくい気がするので・・・
北千住の裏通りにいろんな店がひしめき合うように、政治もいろんな党の声が響き合った方がいいよね、とぼんやりと思ったのでした😉
