I am currently working on the third issue of my ZINE "ekakizine." This ZINE has the concept of "writing a manuscript with just one black ballpoint pen that is commonly used in daily life," so this time I wrote text and drew pictures on A6 (almost postcard size) drawing paper. The theme of this text is reflecting on the year 2024.
Finally, the manuscripts were all gathered, and today I scanned them at a convenience store, but at first, the density was insufficient, and it was a failure. I checked on my PC and realized the text was too faint! I couldn't help but let out a scream. I tend to procrastinate because I'm lazy, but somehow I managed to go back to the convenience store an hour later. I scanned it at the highest density and took notes on the settings before heading home. The second attempt went well.
After this, I will layout the scanned text and drawings on a template downloaded from the printing company's website using Illustrator, and once confirmed, I can submit it. However, I always feel nervous during the data check before submission. Especially in my case, since it's handwritten, warnings pop up, and I carefully approve each one before submitting, so I can only do this when I'm feeling really well and my mind is clear.
I feel exhausted from redoing the scans today, so I want to rest now. I don't know if I can finish it by the end of the year. I aim to publish it four times a year (in March, June, September, and December), so I would like to publish it by the end of the year.
I still have various things to consider regarding selling it. First, for the paper version of the ZINE, I haven't decided whether to consign it to independent bookstores or sell it at events like literary flea markets or ZINE festivals. I will promote an online shop, but it seems that in my case, it doesn't sell well just by that. That said, consignment sales incur about a 30% commission, and events have booth fees.
As for the digital version, I plan to create a PDF file and sell it online at a price about 20% lower than the paper version, but since I create the submission files for the paper version one spread at a time, it's a hassle to connect them all into one PDF. I feel pathetic about how lazy I am. Well, for now, I will take a break today and try again tomorrow.

ただいま私のZINE "ekakizine" の第３号を制作中です。このZINEは「日常的によく使う黒ボールペン1本で原稿を書く」というコンセプトがありますので、今回もA6(ほぼハガキ大)の画用紙につらつらと文章と絵を書きました。今回の文のテーマは、今年2024年を振り返って、ということです。
そしてようやく原稿が出そろって、今日コンビニで原稿をスキャンしたのですが、最初、濃度が足りなくて失敗しました。うちのPCで確認して、文字が薄い！と気づきぎゃーっと声をあげてしまいました。私は面倒くさがり屋なので続きは明日に回しがちなのですが、なんとか頑張って１時間後に再びコンビニへ行きました。一番濃くスキャンして、設定をメモして帰りました。２回目は上手くいきました。
このあとはIllustratorでスキャンした文章と絵を印刷会社のウェブサイトからダウンロードしたテンプレート上にレイアウトして、確認の上入稿すればいいわけですが、入稿前のデータチェックはいつも緊張します。特に私の場合手書き原稿ですから、みな警告が出るのですがそれをひとつひとつ注意深く承認してから入稿しますので、よほど体調が良くて頭がクリアな時でないと出来ません。
今日はスキャンのやり直しがあったからどっと疲れたので、もう休みたいです。年末までに出来るかどうか、わかりません。一応年４回の発行(3、6、9、12月)としているので年末までに発行したいのですが。
売るのもまだ考えなければならないことが色々あります。まず紙版のZINEですが、独立系書店に委託するか、文学フリマやZINEフェスなどのイベントで販売するか、決めていません。オンラインショップも宣伝をしますが、どうも私の場合それだけではなかなか売れないのです。とは言え委託販売では手数料が30％くらいかかるし、イベントは出店料がかかります。
それから電子版ですが、PDFファイルにして、値段も紙版より２割程度安くしてオンラインで販売しようと思いますが、紙版の入稿ファイルは１見開きごとに作っているため、全部つなげて１つのPDFにつなげるのが面倒で。もう私はどこまで面倒くさがりなのかと情けなく思います。まあとりあえず今日は休んで、明日また頑張ろうと思います。
