私とニュース、およびメディア
私は子どもの頃は新聞、テレビ、ラジオなどでニュースに触れていた。私の父は忙しかったからか、新聞を読みながら朝食をとっていた。それで私は主にテレビやラジオでニュースに触れていた。新聞は学校から帰ってから読んでいたが、1面を読んだら次はテレビ面を見ていた。新聞はページ数があるから、一度暇な時に頑張って全部読んでみたら３時間ぐらいかかって頭がくらくらした。
その後、BCLブームの終わりごろに私も短波ラジオを聴くようになり、世界各地の放送を聴くようになって、政治体制の違いによるニュース報道の違いを知った。まだソ連や東西ドイツがあった頃だから、いわゆる西側、例えばBBCやドイチェ・ベレなどと、いわゆる東側、モスクワ放送や北京放送では歴然とした違いがあった。プロパガンダという言葉を知ったのもこの頃だ。
中学生の頃になると社会科のテストで時事問題を扱ったものが１回につき２～３問出てきた。私は新聞をほとんど父に取られていたので、なかなか人名、地名が覚えられず、正解できたりできなかったりしたものだ。まあテスト全体のうちごくわずかの問題数であったため、大きな影響はなかったが。
大学、社会人の頃は新聞購読が高いと思い、もっぱら日曜日に図書館で読んでいた。普段のニュースの仕入れ先はラジオだった。
SNSが主役に
そしてインターネットが普及しても、しばらくはオールドメディア（従来型の新聞、テレビなどのメディア）でニュースを見ていたと思う。それがSNSが広まってから、ニュースはSNSでキャッチすることが多くなった。
ここでNHK放送文化研究所による刊行物「放送研究と調査」2023年10月号( https://www.nhk.or.jp/bunken/book/monthly/index.html?p=202310 )と11月号の記事「デジタル化の中でのニュースの読まれ方～ロイター・デジタルニュースレポート2023から～」は興味深いものがあった。今はソーシャルメディアが広く普及し、情報もそこから得ることが多くなる。
特に私が興味を持ったのは、「注目を集めるニュースの情報源」である。世界平均と日本について調べている。世界平均ではTwitter(現X)やFacebookでは報道機関やジャーナリストが注目され、一方YouTube、Instagram、TikTokなどの映像系のソーシャルメディアではインフルエンサーと呼ばれるネット上の有名人・芸能人が多く注目されている。ところが日本では報道機関やジャーナリストが最も注目されたのはYouTubeのみで、Instagram、TikTokではインフルエンサー、そしてTwitter(現X)やFacebookでは「一般人」の発言力が大きいそうだ。
ニュースと政治への関心の関係
さらに、日本においてはニュースへの関心が「ある」と答えた人の割合が2018年に56％だったのが2023年には46％にまで減少している。そして「ニュースへの関心」の度合いに影響があると指摘される「政治への関心」を見てみると「ニュースへの関心」と同様に減り続け、2018年には41％だったのが2023年には26％になっている。
現代はフェイクニュースや偽情報という言葉もあるし、拡散する危険もあると思うと回避したくもなるのだろうが、やはり複数のメディアをチェックするなどしてニュースに触れていかなければいけないと思う。ニュースや政治に関心を持つことで、この世界を少しでも変えていくことができるのだろうと思う。

Me, News, and Media
When I was a child, I was exposed to the news through newspapers, television, and radio. My father was busy, or maybe it was because he was busy, reading the newspaper and having breakfast. So I was exposed to the news mainly through TV and radio. I read the newspaper after coming home from school, but after reading the front page, I would look at the TV page next. Newspapers have many pages, so once I tried my best to read them all in my spare time, and it took me about three hours and made my head dizzy.
Later, around the end of the BCL boom, I also started listening to shortwave radio and began to listen to broadcasts from around the world and learned about the differences in news reporting between different political systems. Since the Soviet Union and East and West Germany were still in existence, there was a clear difference between the so-called West, such as the BBC and Deutsche Borse, and the so-called East, such as the Moscow and Beijing Broadcasting Corporation. It was also around this time that I learned the term "propaganda.
When I was in junior high school, there were two or three questions per social studies test that dealt with current affairs. Since my father took most of the newspapers from me, it was difficult for me to remember the names of people and places, and I sometimes answered correctly and sometimes incorrectly. But since it was only a small fraction of the total number of questions on the test, it did not have a big impact on me.
When I was in college and working, I thought newspaper subscriptions were expensive, so I read exclusively at the library on Sundays. My usual source of news was the radio.
SNS takes center stage
And even after the Internet became popular, I think I watched news on old media (traditional newspapers, TV, and other media) for a while. Since the spread of SNS, however, I have been catching more and more news on SNS.
Here is an article from the October 2023 issue of "Broadcasting Research and Survey" ( https://www.nhk.or.jp/bunken/book/monthly/index.html?p=202310 ), a publication by NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute, and the November 2023 issue of "How News is Read in the Digital World - The From the Reuters Digital News Report 2023," were interesting. Social media is now widely used and information is often obtained from them.
Of particular interest to me are the "sources of attention-grabbing news". I examine the global average and Japan. The global average shows that news organizations and journalists are the most popular sources of news on Twitter (now X) and Facebook, while online celebrities and entertainers, known as influencers, are the most popular sources of news on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other video-based social media sites. In Japan, however, news organizations and journalists have received the most attention only on YouTube, while influencers on Instagram and TikTok, and "ordinary people" on Twitter (now X) and Facebook have a large voice.
Relationship between news and interest in politics
Furthermore, in Japan, the percentage of respondents who say they are "interested" in news has declined from 56% in 2018 to 46% in 2023. And when we look at "interest in politics," which is pointed out to have an impact on the level of "interest in news," it continues to decline in the same way as "interest in news," from 41% in 2018 to 26% in 2023.
In this day and age, there are terms like fake news and disinformation, and it may be tempting to avoid them given the dangers of spreading them, but we still need to stay in touch with the news by checking multiple media outlets, for example. I believe that by taking an interest in news and politics, we can make a small difference in this world.
