I think anyone who is interested in (in some form) the future, futurology, new technologies, or simply likes watching movies and reading sci-fi books has heard that some writer or futurologist predicted something before the rest. Sometimes it is a simple task, where you just have to connect the dots, pay attention to the flow of money, and correctly guess future trends. Sometimes it is more difficult when humanity has several paths of development or it is difficult to determine which trends will be abandoned for various reasons. Not to mention the situation when the so-called Black Swan appears. Although this symbol refers to economics, I see no reason why it could not be used here. What does this bird symbolize? A phenomenon that suddenly appeared and caused chaos in the world. Due to my ignorance, I will not undertake to bid which group predicted the future more often. It seems to me that writers have more success in this field. George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, H. G. Welles, Jules Verne, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. you certainly know these names or have heard them at least once. Poles also have a solid representation in this topic - the works of Stanisław Lem. I have heard from several sources, both Polish and foreign, that our author's predictions were among the most accurate.
Today, however, I will talk about a unique film. Although I do not know the original, I have heard from EVERYONE who knows Masamune Shirow's comic book that it differs significantly from the movie. So much so that if this manga was adapted to the screen with 100% accuracy, we would get a different story. In terms of atmosphere, the 2-season Stand Alone Complex series is supposedly closer to its source material. However, sometimes a great future is created by several people. For example, Playstation 1.
Recently, my partner and I watched a video about the genesis of this iconic console. She did not know this story and, just as she usually does not pay attention to this type of story from my childhood, she was interested in this one. In short - a brilliant specialist, Ken Kutaragi, perfectly predicted the future of consoles and came up with the idea of creating his own. Even though he got most of it right, some aspects eluded him, and in others he had to rely on experts (Norio Ohga - then head of Sony, Teiyu Goto - creator of the PS1 controller and a few others). It's also not without significance that Kutaragi was very fucking lucky. Who knows what the present would look like if a few people who wanted the same thing didn't meet at the perfect point in their timelines? Who knows how the fate of PS1 would have turned out if Norio Ohga had been a typical, egghead Japanese? Maybe he is like that in everyday life, but that one day he made one of the best decisions of his life. If not the best. In contrast to the equally legendary head of Nintendo, who had success right under his nose. He saw it, heard it, felt it, touched it, and yet "spit" on Sony's offer. I don't blame him for that, because later he washed away this disgrace, getting Nintendo out of even bigger trouble.
Why do I mention PS1? Because it was similar in the case of Ghost in the Shell. The creator who started it all - Masamune Shirow. The director who took the bold role of throwing some ideas into the trash (allegedly Mr. Shirow was furious about it and often argued fiercely with the director, which probably also influenced the level and shape of the film) - Mamoru Oshii. I will add that he was experiencing the peak period of his creativity then. The brilliant composer who created the excellent soundtrack - Kenji Kawai. The voice actors are also an important part of the composition. Akio Otsuka, whom I praise on many occasions. The late Atsuko Tanaka, whose voice is a perfect match for Motoko Kusanagi. Iemasa Kayumi in a great role as the Puppet Master. Tamio Ôki as the boss of Aramaki. As well as Kōichi Yamadera, who played the role of Togusa. We must not forget about the studio I.G and Bandai Visual.
The influence of this film on pop culture was so significant that I can easily put this anime next to brands such as DB, Harry Potter, Pokemon, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Rocky. Even in Poland, which was a backward country on the day of the premiere of the first part of GitS. Where animation was still far from being recognized as art intended for an adult audience. Once, when I was writing a text on a similar topic, I asked an older friend who had seen much more films than me, if he remembered things about this anime in the '90s and the first years of the new millennium. He is not a big fan of anime, but like me, he had heard of Ghost in the Shell back then. I was too young to be able to read articles or reviews about it in the Polish press, but I have a good memory, so I remembered the headlines, covers, posters advertising illegal screenings in cinemas. As for the rest of the world, you probably know such titles and names as The Matrix, Avatar, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, the Wachowski sisters, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg? Or games like Deus Ex, Metal Gear Solid, Cyberpunk 2077 or Them by Bungie (they borrowed a lot XD).
A few years before the premiere of the biggest Polish game, Cyberpunk 2077, a friend came to me with his partner. At that time, we were waiting for the premiere of the "successor" to the 3rd part of The Witcher. I already knew GitS almost by heart, so I could observe their reactions. Surprise, joy of watching a good show, focus on the content dominated. And there was something to focus on. The Japanese predicted the future quite accurately. It is true that our world will probably be different from what the 1st part of GitS showed (the film takes place in 2029), but not in a completely different way.
I will start with cybersecurity. It is true that many people are not aware of the threats, but large countries have it in the darkest corners of their asses. Let's start with such "funny" things as making fun of heads of state (at one time, Belarusian or Russian trolls contacted European leaders pretending to be diplomats from their countries). It's not that dangerous at the state level (due to a number of safeguards), but what are ordinary citizens supposed to say when they hear their child/grandchild/parent asking for money? Or, as cybernetic implants become more common, what will an ordinary person do when some Chinese, Russian or American hacks their brain for fun? Such things are already happening now with... Chastity belts that connect to the internet (there have already been several such hacks - victims had to pay tribute). Not to mention that a hacker attack can destabilize society in various ways. A precisely executed attack can impede the functioning of a state or affect its economic indicators. It is no coincidence that one of the strategic goals of NATO and the USA was and is cybersecurity, and consequently, the creation of special groups that will specialize in threats of this type.
The film quite accurately showed the atomization of society. It seems that they approached the subject from a slightly different angle, but that doesn't matter - the effect is the same. Everyone has their own movies, series, hobbies. The times when everyone watched the same thing are already a thing of the past. Apart from, of course, big series, such as Stranger Things. People are not as collective as they were in our parents' times. This is not helped by the fact that many of them live in huge mega-blocks. We also have camouflage that works like in the 1995 movie. I don't know how widespread this technology is, but I've seen a few videos showing technology that reflects or bends sunlight. Sorry, I don't know much about this, but my eyesight is pretty good and I wouldn't be able to see them. Or the aforementioned various implants that enhance our senses or increase the capabilities of the human body. Even their predictions about the internet turned out to be largely accurate, which was not so obvious 30 years ago. Not to mention technology - the development of AI, 3D printers, cars without drivers. They even predicted an excess of ads and the need to install ad-block, although this issue was better developed in the 1st volume of Altered Carbon (I highly recommend it!!!).
And as for the film itself, because it is worth devoting at least one paragraph exclusively to it, it has aged like Demi Moore, i.e. in a very good style. Both in terms of message, script, drawing and animation. Of course, we will find some individual elements that have aged a bit worse or could have been written a bit better, but these are small enough things to ignore. Especially since the anime is complex and addresses certain topics in a comprehensive way. For example, the thread about humanity, the soul. Back when we didn't have technology to waste time and take money, these issues were simpler, because it was easier for us to come to the right conclusions. In terms of animation and drawing, GitS can still delight. The fight with the Puppet Master's slave, and especially the brutal clash with the tank robot, can delight with the use of space, sound and fast action. It is not at the level of Akira, but the fact that I praise these aspects 30 years after the premiere speaks for itself. Is this anime worth watching? You have the answer in this text.

Czasem jest to proste zadanie, w którym wystarczy połączyć kropki, zwrócić uwagę na przepływ pieniędzy oraz trafnie zgadnąć przyszłe trendy. Czasem jest trudniej, gdy ludzkość ma kilka dróg rozwoju lub trudno stwierdzić, które trendy zostaną porzucone z różnych powodów. Nie wspominając o sytuacji, gdy pojawia się tzw. Czarny Łabędź. Co prawda ten symbol dotyczy ekonomii, ale nie widzę powodu, dla którego nie można byłoby go tu zastosować. Co symbolizuje ten ptak? Zjawisko które nagle pojawiło się i wprowadziło zamęt na świecie. Z uwagi na swoją niewiedzę, nie podejmuję się licytowania, która grupa częściej przewidziała przyszłość. Wydaje mi się, że pisarze mają więcej sukcesów na tym polu. George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, H. Dzisiaj jednak pomówię o pewnym wyjątkowym filmie. Co prawda nie znam pierwowzoru, ale słyszałem od KAŻDEJ osoby, która zna komiks Masamune Shirow, że ten znacząco różni się od filmu kinowego. Na tyle mocno, że gdyby zekranizować tę mangę ze 100% dokładnością, to dostalibyśmy inną historię. Jeśli chodzi o klimat, podobno 2-sezonowy serial Stand Alone Complex jest bliższy względem swojego materiału źródłowego. Czasem jest jednak tak, że wielką przyszłość tworzy kilka osób. Np. Playstation 1.
Niedawno temu wraz z moją partnerką obejrzałem filmik o genezie tej kultowej konsoli. Ona nie znała tej opowieści i tak jak zazwyczaj nie przywiązuje uwagi do tego typu historii z czasów mojego dzieciństwa, tak tutaj była zainteresowana. W telegraficznym skrócie - genialny specjalista, Ken Kutaragi, perfekcyjnie przewidział przyszłość konsol i wpadł na pomysł stworzenia własnej. Mimo, że trafił z większością rzeczy, to pewne aspekty mu umknęły, a w innych musiał polegać na ekspertach (Norio Ohga - ówczesny szef Sony, Teiyu Goto - twórca pada do PS1 i kilku innych). Nie bez znaczenia jest też to, że Kutaragi miał kurewsko dużo szczęścia. Kto wie jakby wyglądała teraźniejszość, gdyby kilku ludzi pragnących tego samego, nie spotkało się w idealnym punkcie na swoich liniach czasu? Kto wie jakby potoczyły się losy PS1, gdyby Norio Ohga był typowym, jajogłowym Japończykiem? Może taki jest na codzień, ale tego jednego dnia podjął jedną z najlepszych decyzji w swoim życiu. Jak nie najlepszą. W przeciwieństwie do równie legendarnego szefa Nintendo, który miał sukces przed swoim nosem. Widział go, słyszał, czuł, dotykał, a mimo to "splunął" na ofertę Sony. Nie wypominam mu tego, bo potem zmył z siebie tę hańbę, wyciągając Nintendo z jeszcze większych problemów.
Czemu wspominam o PS1? Bo podobnie było w przypadku Ghost in the Shell. Pomysłodawca, od którego wszystko się zaczęło - Masamune Shirow. Reżyser, który podjął odważną rolę wyrzucenia niektórych pomysłów do kosza (podobno pan Shirow był z tego powodu wściekły i często ostro kłócił się z reżyserem, co zapewne też miało wpływ na poziom, jak i kształt filmu) - Mamoru Oshii. Dodam, że wtedy przeżywał szczytowy okres swojej twórczości. Genialny kompozytor, który stworzył wyśmienity soundtrack - Kenji Kawai. Ważną częścią składową są również aktorzy głosowi. Akio Otsuka, którego chwalę przy wielu okazjach. Świętej pamięci Atsuko Tanaka, której głos idealnie pasuje do Motoko Kusanagi. Iemasa Kayumi w świetnej roli Władcy Marionetek. Tamio Ôki jako szef Aramaki. Jak również Kōichi Yamadera, który wcielił się w rolę Togusy. Nie wolno też zapomnieć o studiu I.G oraz Bandai Visual.

Nawet w Polsce, która w dniu premiery 1 części GitS była zacofanym krajem. Gdzie ciągle było daleko do uznania animacji za sztukę przeznaczoną dla dorosłego odbiorcy. Kiedyś jak pisałem tekst o podobnej tematyce, zapytałem się starszego kolegi, który widział znacznie więcej filmów ode mnie, czy pamięta rzeczy dotyczące tego anime w latach '90 i pierwszych latach nowego tysiąclecia. Nie przepada za anime, ale podobnie jak ja, słyszał wtedy o Ghost in the Shell. Byłem wtedy zbyt młody, by móc przeczytać artykuły lub recenzje na jego temat w Polskiej prasie, ale mam dobrą pamięć, więc zapamiętałem nagłówki, okładki, plakaty reklamujące nielegalne seanse w kinach. Jeśli chodzi o resztę świata, to chyba kojarzycie takie tytuły i nazwiska, jak Matrix, Avatar, A.I. Sztuczna Inteligencja, siostry Wachowskie, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg? Albo gry jak Deus Ex, Metal Gear Solid, Cyberpunk 2077 lub Oni od Bungie (oni to w ogóle dużo pożyczyli XD).
Kilka lat przed premierą największej Polskiej gry, Cyberpunk 2077, przyszedł do mnie przyjaciel ze swoją partnerką. W tamtym czasie czekaliśmy na premierę "następcy" 3 części Wiedźmina. Już wtedy znałem GitS niemal na pamięć, więc mogłem obserwować ich reakcje. Dominowało zaskoczenie, radość z oglądania dobrego show, skupienie na treści. A było na czym się skupić. Japończycy dość celnie przewidzieli przyszłość. Co prawda nasz świat raczej będzie się różnił od tego, co pokazała 1 część GitSa (film dzieje się w 2029 roku), ale nie w całkowity sposób.
Zacznę od cyberbezpieczeństwa. Co prawda wielu ludzi nie zdaje sobie sprawy z zagrożeń, ale duże państwa mają to w najciemniejszych zakamarkach swoich dup. Zacznijmy od takich "śmiesznych" rzeczy, jak żartowanie sobie z głów państwa (swego czasu Białoruskie lub Rosyjskie trolle kontaktowały się z Europejskimi liderami udając dyplomatów ze swoich krajów). To co prawda nie jest aż tak groźne na poziomie państwa (z uwagi na szereg zabezpieczeń), ale co mają powiedzieć zwykli obywatele, którzy słyszą swoje dziecko / wnuka / rodzica proszącego o pieniądze? Albo jak się upowszechnią cybernetyczne wszczepy - co zrobi zwykły człowiek, gdy jakiś Chińczyk, Rosjanin lub Amerykanin dla żartów shakuje mu mózg? Takie rzeczy dzieją się już teraz przy... Pasach cnoty, które łączą się z internetem (było już kilka włamań tego typu - ofiary musiały wpłacić haracz). Nie wspominając o tym, że atak hakerski może zdestabilizować społeczeństwo na różne sposoby. Precyzyjnie przeprowadzony atak może utrudnić funkcjonowanie państwa lub wpłynąć na jego wskaźniki gospodarcze. Nieprzypadkowo jednym z celów strategicznych NATO i USA, było i jest cyberbezpieczeństwo, a co za tym idzie, stworzenie specjalnych grup, które będą specjalizować się z zagrożeniami tego typu.
Film całkiem trafnie pokazał atomizację społeczeństwa. Co prawda wygląda na to, że podeszli od tematu od nieco innej strony, ale to nie szkodzi - efekt jest taki sam. Każdy ma swoje filmy, seriale, hobby. Czasy gdy wszyscy oglądali to samo, już teraz są przeszłością. Pomijając rzecz jasna duże seriale, jak np. Stranger Things. Ludzie nie stanowią takiej zbiorowości, jak w czasach naszych rodziców. Nie pomaga temu fakt, że wielu z nich żyje w olbrzymich megablokach. Mamy też kamuflaże, które działają jak w filmie z 1995. Nie wiem, na ile ta technologia jest powszechna, ale widziałem kilka filmików pokazujących technologię odbijającą lub zakrzywiającą światło słoneczne. Wybaczcie, nie znam się na tym, ale wzrok mam całkiem niezły i nie byłbym w stanie ich zauważyć. Albo wspomniane już różne implanty wzmacniające nasze zmysły lub zwiększające możliwości ludzkiego ciała. Nawet ich przewidywania dotyczące internetu okazały się być w dużej mierze trafne, co nie było tak oczywiste 30 lat temu. Nie wspominając o technologii - rozwoju AI, drukarkach 3D, samochodach bez kierowców. Przewidzieli nawet nadmiar reklam i konieczność instalacji ad-blocka, aczkolwiek tę kwestię lepiej rozwinął 1 tom Altered Carbon (bardzo polecam!!!).
A jeśli chodzi o sam film, bo wypada poświęcić przynajmniej jeden akapit wyłącznie o nim, zestarzał się jak Demi Moore, czyli w bardzo dobrym stylu. Zarówno w kwestii przesłania, scenariusza, kreski, jak i animacji. Oczywiście znajdziemy pewne pojedyncze elementy, które zestarzały się nieco gorzej lub można było je było napisać nieco lepiej, ale są to na tyle małe rzeczy, że można je zignorować. Tym bardziej, że anime jest złożone i porusza pewne tematy w sposób kompleksowy. Np. wątek dotyczący człowieczeństwa, duszy. Kiedyś, gdy nie mieliśmy technologii do zapychania czasu i zabierania pieniędzy, te zagadnienia były prostsze, bo łatwiej nam było dojść do prawidłowych wniosków. W kwestii animacji i kreski, GitS nadal potrafi zachwycić. Walka z niewolnikiem Puppet Mastera, a zwłaszcza brutalne starcie z robotem-czołgiem potrafią zachwycić wykorzystaniem przestrzeni, udźwiękowieniem i szybką akcją. Nie jest to poziom Akiry, ale sam fakt, że zachwalam te aspekty 30 lat po premierze, mówi sam za siebie. Czy warto obejrzeć to anime? Odpowiedź macie zawartą w tym tekście.
