Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Beryl Gardinant, a forty-something small-town guy who lives with his parents in a rural village while training with the sword in a small dojo he has in his home. One day, a girl appears at his doorstep to give him a letter and then introduces herself as Allucia Citrus, a former student of Beryl's swordmanship and current leader of the Knights of Liberion (the army of the empire that rules this kingdom). The letter our protagonist receives is nothing less than an invitation to work in the capital as a special trainer for the Order of Liberion. It seems that his sword skills will lead him on a series of adventures far from his quiet, rustic village life.

I think last season was one of the seasons where I watched the least amount of fantasy anime so far, and I'm quite grateful for that. Not only because I didn't have to watch the same story repeat itself over and over again and then make the same criticism as always, but also because it gave me the opportunity to explore other genres such as Slice of Life, for example. However, this time I gave the anime I'm going to talk about today a chance because of its somewhat different plot. Many of you who read my reviews already know that the fantasy genre is overexploited with similar stories and generic plots. That's why watching an anime that stands out from the rest, even if only a little, is very appealing, and this is one of those cases.
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman is, in short, a fantasy anime that differs from others in the same genre in that it has a protagonist who breaks the mold we all know. I'm referring to the typical young, attractive protagonist with powers and abilities that make him invincible and a harem of women in love with him as a team. In this case, he is neither young, nor powerful, nor completely invincible; he is simply a country bumpkin who is good with a sword. The simple fact that the focus is on a person who has no intention of attracting attention or doing much with his life because he believes he has lived long enough gives us a much more mature, somewhat realistic, and interesting view of this story, which is still fantastic.

Muchos de los que me leen ya saben que el género de fantasía está demasiado explotado con historias similares y tramas genéricas. Es por eso que ver un anime que se diferencie de los demás, aunque sea un poco, llama mucho la atención y este es uno de esos casos.
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman es, en resumen, un anime de fantasía que se diferencia de los demás de su mismo género por tener a un protagonista que rompe con el patrón que todos conocemos. Me refiero al típico protagonista joven, atractivo, con poderes y habilidades que lo hacen invencible y un harem de mujeres enamoradas de él como equipo. En este caso no es ni joven, ni poderoso, ni completamente invencible; sino que es un simple pueblerino que es bueno con la espada nomás. El simple hecho de que la atención se la lleve una persona que no tiene pensado llamar la atención ni hacer gran cosa con su vida ya que cree haber vivido lo suficiente, nos da una visión mucho más madura, un poco realista e interesante de esta historia que sigue siendo fantástica.

Of course, since he has trained with the sword almost his entire life, it's not that he's going to leave something important behind to do something else, but rather that he will do the same thing he always has, but with older, more experienced people and in a much bigger place.
One detail I like about this plot is that it doesn't seek to attract attention with unexpected twists and dramatic moments all the time. It's true that it plays a lot with chance, especially with the fact that upon arriving in the capital, our protagonist meets several of his students again in important positions and dangerous jobs. At one point, it even feels a bit like they are repeating the same old cliché of the protagonist's "harem" of women, but this is dismissed later when we learn what each of them thinks of our forty-something small-town guy. Otherwise, the plot is more involved in unusual and even dangerous situations in Beryl's life in the capital as he trains and teaches sword fighting alongside his students and other members of the army.

Volviendo a la trama que ya mencionamos arriba, nuestro protagonista Beryl Gardinant tiene uno de esos “eventos canónicos” e inesperados que cambiará por completo su vida tranquila en su pequeño pueblo natal. A regañadientes, no tiene otra opción que aceptar la oferta de enseñar a uno de los ejercicios más grandes de este mundo medieval y fantástico en la capital del reino. Con solo mencionar esto ya podemos tener una idea del cambio que tendrá nuestro protagonista en cuanto a su rutina y vida personal y todo lo que dejará atrás. Claro está, como solo ha entrenado con la espada casi toda su vida, no es que vaya a dejar algo importante por hacer otra cosa, sino que hará lo mismo de siempre pero con gente mayor, más experimentada y en un lugar mucho más grande.
Un detalle que me gusta de esta trama es que no busca llamar tanto la atención con giros inesperados ni momentos dramáticos a cada rato. Si es cierto que juega mucho con la casualidad, sobre todo con el hecho de que al llegar a la capital, nuestro protagonista se encuentra de nuevo con varias de sus estudiantes en puestos importantes y trabajos peligrosos. Incluso, en cierto momento se puede sentir un poco que repiten el mismo cliché de siempre del “harem” de mujeres que tiene el protagonista; pero esto se descarta después al saber muy bien los pensamientos que tiene cada quien con nuestro cuarentón pueblerino. Pero de resto la trama se envuelve más en situaciones poco comunes y hasta peligrosas en la vida de Beryl en la capital mientras entrena y enseña espada junto con sus estudiantes y otros miembros del ejército.

The various confrontations we see in this anime stand out quite a bit since our protagonist has no special abilities, magical powers, or anything of the sort. His strength lies simply in his experience and extensive training with the sword. And we can see this in every battle when we see how he manages to dominate and defeat his opponent each time, without any tricks or help of any kind. This is arguably the most striking aspect of the anime, as seeing a forty-year-old swordsman beat up everyone (even very powerful enemies) is obviously quite appealing. Another appealing aspect, apparently, is the fanservice, which fortunately is almost non-existent in this anime.
The humor is another highlight, as it is neither childish nor too heavy. In fact, there is very little humor to be found in this anime in its everyday situations, with mostly awkward and ironic moments. What I mean is that the theme of Beryl Gardinant's perception of himself is not as heavy as it is in other cases. Because yes, this is not the first time I have seen an anime where the protagonist is skilled or strong, but thinks that he is not and underestimates himself to the point of becoming completely incredulous and stubborn. In this case, it's not quite like that, because although he demonstrates skill and experience, he doesn't believe he's worthy of being considered a "Master Swordsman", but he is aware of how skilled and experienced he is.

Otro detalle interesante es el tema de las batallas, aunque es más visual que otra cosa. Los distintos enfrentamientos que vemos en este anime se destacan bastante ya que nuestro protagonista no posee ninguna habilidad especial, poder mágico ni nada por el estilo. Lo suyo es simplemente experiencia y mucho entrenamiento con la espada. Y eso lo podemos notar en cada batalla cuando vemos cómo él logra dominar y vencer a su oponente en cada ocasión, sin ningún truco ni ayuda de ningún tipo. Se puede decir que esto es lo más llamativo del anime, ya que ver a un espadachín de cuarenta años darle una paliza a todo el mundo (incluso a enemigos muy poderosos) es algo que, obviamente, atrae bastante. Otra cosa que también atrae -por lo visto- es el fanservice, cosa que afortunadamente casi ni se ve en este anime.
El humor que tiene es otro punto a destacar, ya que no es ni un humor infantil ni tampoco muy pesado. Es más, se puede decir que es muy poco el humor que podemos encontrarle a este anime en sus situaciones cotidianas con momentos incómodos e irónicos, más que todo. Porque sí, esta no es la primera vez que he visto un anime donde el protagonista es hábil o fuerte, pero piensa que en realidad no lo es y se subestima bastante hasta llegar a ser un completo incrédulo y cabeza dura. En este caso no es del todo así, ya que si bien demuestra tener habilidades experiencia, no cree que sea digno de considerarse un “Maestro Espadachín”, pero sí es consciente de lo hábil y experimentado que es.

Sus estudiantes se destacan de forma particular también con personalidades diferentes y habilidades bastante interesantes.
En cuanto al tema de los enemigos no tengo mucho que opinar ya que no es un anime que posea un antagonista principal, sino que son más bien un grupo de individuos que solo comparten cierta creencia sobre el Dios de este mundo y su interpretación del bien y el mal. Pero de que haya un solo rostro detrás, como un Rey Demonio o algo así, no lo hay. Así que bueno, tampoco es que valga la pena indagar más con esto. Otra cosa por mencionar de este anime es que tiene uno que otro episodio tranquilo, como varias veces se puede sentir que es el anime en general con su ritmo lento y todo. También trata ciertos temas un tanto fuertes, como lo es la muerte de un ser querido y la confianza. Casos como Mewi Freya sirven muy bien de ejemplo.

Be careful not to be fooled, though, because in many cases it's obvious that they use CGI or 3D animation for certain battles or action sequences, but they camouflage it very well with detailed strokes to make it look like pure 2D. However, the 120° turns, the focus, and the movement styles and choreography are great.
Otherwise, the animation does a good job of giving us good character designs, a color palette that is not too strong or bright, good landscapes, and excellent visual effects. The same goes for the sound effects, especially the sounds of swords, explosions, spells, etc. The soundtrack also stands out with epic moments, conveying the emotions of each episode, no matter how calm it may be. The opening isn't the best of the season, but it doesn't sound or look that bad in the end. In short, this anime is perfect if you're looking for something very different from what you see so often in this industry, especially in the fantasy genre.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the fantasy, adventure, and action genres.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado visual de este anime. Con dos estudios a cargo de su producción y animación (uno de estos Passione), es normal ver que posee una muy buena calidad de principio a fin. Sobre todo con el tema de las batallas que, como dije antes, llegan a ser bastante llamativas por lo bien hechas que están en cuanto a fluidez y detalles visuales se refiere. Ojo, que no nos engañen, en muchos casos se nota que usan el CGI o la animación en 3D para ciertas batallas o secuencias de acción, pero lo camuflan muy bien con trazos bien detallados para que parezca que es puro 2D. Sin embargo, los giros de 120°, los enfoques o los estilos de movimiento y coreografías son geniales.
De resto, la animación cumple bien con darnos buenos diseños de personajes, una paleta de colores no tan fuertes ni brillantes, buenos paisajes y excelentes efectos visuales. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos de sonido, sobre todo con los sonidos de las espadas, las explosiones, los encantamientos, etc. La banda sonora también llega a destacarse con momentos épicos, transmitiendo las emociones que tiene cada episodio aún por muy tranquilo que sea. Su Opening no es que sea el mejor de la temporada, pero no suena ni se ve tan mal al final. En resumen, este anime es perfecto si buscas algo muy distinto a lo que se ve con tanta frecuencia en esta industria, sobre todo en el género de la fantasía.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, aventura y acción.
