The truth is the only hope in a world embraced by darkness.
Almost two thousand years later, the Earth's surface has become a toxic death camp. Deep within the shelters, protected by environmental maintenance teams, lives the last wave of humans. Among the tasks they have to survive, exploring the past often serves as the starting point for understanding the present.
In the archive exploration section, crammed with computers and binary codes, images of the green world are processed and restored in an attempt to decipher time without planetary death. And although the evidence demonstrates the beauty of times without apocalypse, the passing years and the oblivion they drag with them end up turning them into a mere myth.
Something irrelevant, meaningless... Although among so many souls abandoned to resignation, there is one man who, delving into the traces of the past, can find the truth that the rest of existence refuses to discover.
This is Pale Cocoon.
Ura believes it is still possible to understand the wake of the past, even if the rest of existence considers it useless. Faced with the green history of glorious times, there in the archives reflected on the computer, Ura prays that those images of landscapes and flowery fields are more than a simple myth.
_Humanity only knows the excavation areas; a great metal shelter beneath the planet where life no longer makes sense. There they live apathetic, routine, without any other value... Confined to reliving the past through photographs and stories that no one knows were true.
Only Ura retains the enthusiasm to decipher history, although her partner, Riko, believes it's not worth investigating how humans destroyed their own planet. For her, there's no point in dwelling on the past, on the painful, on what cannot be seen or touched.
It's better to forget, Riko believes, because in forgetting lies true peace...
Suddenly, a new file arrives at Ura's office. For the first time, it's a video. He rushes to restore it, surprised by the images that show texts unrelated to the computer.
Despite Riko's refusal, Ura embarks on the unthinkable. Upon deciphering the archive, she decides to delve beyond what her eyes see, in an attempt to convince the apathetic souls.
And so she finds what ultimately sheds light on the origin of the shelters, and on what was capable of saving humanity at the time.
Everything makes sense before her eyes, and before ours as well.
Pale Cocoon delves into the constant battle of the human mind for its identity, its history, its traces of the past. It is an OVA of beautiful transitions, of harsh realities drenched in disillusionment, but which, in Ura's mind, become hope.
How far can apathy go?
This OVA is a reflection on that which completely destroys us: oblivion. There are no quick cures in a world that is collapsing, that is dying. The story of a happy past can be bitter in a devastating present. However, hope lies there, in the times that once existed and were kind.
Wonderfully nostalgic and captivating, Pale Cocoon is an OVA tinged with the power of Cliffhanger. At twenty-two minutes long, the story has enough power to sweep you away in a sea of sensations with metallic yet beautiful images.
For a short story, it's capable of staying in your memory forever. Without a doubt, it's one of the best OVAs I've had the opportunity to watch.

La verdad es la única esperanza en un mundo abrazado por la oscuridad.
Casi dos mil años después, la superficie de la tierra se ha convertido en un campo tóxico de muerte. En la profundidad de los refugios, protegidos por los equipos de mantenimiento medioambiental, vive la última tanda de humanos. Entre las tareas que tienen para sobrevivir, coexiste aquella en la que explorar el pasado suele ser el punto de partida para entender el presente.
En la sección de exploración de archivos, atiborrada de computadoras y códigos binarios, las imágenes del mundo verde se procesan y restauran en un intento por descifrar el tiempo sin muerte planetaria. Y aunque las evidencias demuestren la belleza de las épocas sin apocalipsis, los años que avanzan y el olvido que arrastran con ellos terminan por convertirlas en un simple mito.
Algo sin relevancia, sin sentido... Aunque entre tantas almas abandonadas a la resignación, hay un hombre que, hurgando en la huella del pasado, puede encontrar la verdad que el resto de la existencia se niega a descubrir.
Esto es Pale Cocoon.
Ura cree que todavía es posible entender la estela del pasado, aunque el resto de la existencia considere que es algo inútil. Frente a la historia verde del tiempo glorioso, allí en los archivos reflejados en el computador, Ura ruega para que esas imágenes de paisajes y campos floreados sean más que un simple mito.
La humanidad solo conoce las áreas de excavación; un gran refugio de metal por debajo del planeta en el que la vida ya no tiene sentido. Allí conviven apáticos, rutinarios, sin ningún otro valor... Confinados a revivir el pasado a través de fotografías y cuentos que nadie sabe si fueron verdad.
Solo Ura conserva el entusiasmo por descifrar la historia, aunque su compañera, Riko, crea que no vale la pena indagar en cómo fue que los humanos destruyeron su propio planeta. Para ella no tiene sentido vivir del pasado, de lo doloroso, de lo que no se puede ver o tocar.
Es mejor olvidar -cree Riko-, porque en el olvido está la paz verdadera...
De pronto llega un archivo nuevo a la oficina de Ura. Por primera vez se trata de un video. Él se apresura a restaurarlo, sorprendido por las imágenes que muestran textos ajenos al computador.
Pese a la negativa de Riko, Ura se embarca en lo impensable. Al descifrar el archivo, decide indagar más allá de lo que sus ojos conocen, en un intento por convencer a las almas apáticas.
Y así encuentra lo que termina por esclarecer el origen de los refugios, y, de lo que fue capaz de salvar a la humanidad en su momento.
Todo cobra sentido frente a sus ojos, y también frente a los nuestros.
Pale Cocoon indaga en la batalla constante de la mente humana por su identidad, su historia, sus rastros de antaño. Es una Ova de transiciones hermosas, de duras realidades empapadas de desilusión, pero que, en la mente de Ura, se convierten en esperanza.
¿Hasta dónde puede llegar la apatía?
Esta Ova es una reflexión contra aquello que nos destruye por completo: el olvido. No hay curas rápidas en un mundo que colapsa, que agoniza. La historia del pasado feliz puede ser agria en un presente devastador. Sin embargo, la esperanza reside allí, en las épocas que alguna vez existieron y fueron bondadosas.
Maravillosamente nostálgico y cautivador, Pale Cocoon es una Ova matizada con el poder del Cliffhanger. Con veintidós minutos de duración, la historia tiene suficiente poder cómo para arrastrarte a un mar de sensaciones en imágenes metálicas, pero hermosas.
Para ser una historia corta, es capaz de permanecer en tu memoria para siempre. Sin duda alguna, es una de las mejores Ovas que he tenido la oportunidad de ver.
