Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, damas y caballeros. ¿Cómo están? ¿Cómo se encuentran el día de hoy? Espero que muy bien. Yo particularmente me encuentro bien, aunque me estaba dando un descanso de tantas publicaciones que hice la semana pasada, casi que un post por día. Creo que es bastante imposible mantener ese ritmo; muchas veces uno no tiene ideas para continuar escribiendo.
Esta reseña la estoy haciendo porque me acordé de ella. Es una obra de, técnicamente, hace aproximadamente 9 años. Me acuerdo cuando la vi por primera vez: aluciné con la calidad de la animación, y no es para menos. Estamos hablando de una OVA, donde meten mucho más presupuesto para que las cosas se vean espectaculares. Esta OVA es un resumen, prácticamente, de los primeros dos capítulos del anime que sacarían después.
Yo les voy a hablar de la OVA; luego les hablaré del anime si llego a verlo, porque, hablándoles con sinceridad, me quedé con las ganas de ver y saber muchísimo más.
Ahora te dejo un dato que hará que te intereses en ver esto o en saber de qué va la trama: estamos hablando de un isekai muy diferente, un seinen hecho por el creador nada más y nada menos que de Hellsing. Con eso ya sabrás qué es lo que nos vamos a esperar: muchas peleas con un montón de sangre. Lo llamativo es que esta vez estamos llenos de personajes históricos japoneses también, aunque, sinceramente, solo reconozco a unos pocos, como Oda Nobunaga. Se ve que la mayoría son guerreros de aquellas épocas o aún más atrás.
Así que, sin más dilación, hablemos un poco de Drifters.
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How are you? How are you all doing today? I hope you’re doing well. Personally, I’m alright, though I’ve been taking a break from all the posts I made last week—nearly one a day. I think it’s quite impossible to keep up that pace; often, you just run out of ideas to keep writing.
I’m doing this review because I suddenly remembered it. It’s a work from, technically, about nine years ago. I remember when I first watched it—I was blown away by the animation quality, and understandably so. We’re talking about an OVA, where they pour in a much bigger budget to make everything look spectacular. This OVA is essentially a recap of the first two episodes of the anime they’d later release.
I’ll talk about the OVA first; then, I’ll discuss the anime if I end up watching it. Because, to be honest, I was left wanting to see and know so much more.
Now, here’s a little fact that might pique your interest in checking this out or learning about its plot: we’re dealing with a very different kind of isekai, a seinen by none other than the creator of Hellsing. With that, you’ll already know what to expect—plenty of fights with loads of blood. What’s striking is that this time, it’s packed with historical Japanese figures as well, though, truthfully, I only recognise a few, like Oda Nobunaga. It seems most of them are warriors from that era or even earlier.
So, without further ado, let’s talk a bit about Drifters.

La historia nos pone en la piel de Shimazu Toyohisa, un guerrero samurái que, después de haber podido herir a un comandante importante en una guerra, herido decide volver a su ciudad, encontrándose con su inminente muerte, aunque en vez de morir, es teletransportado a una extraña sala blanca llena de puertas por los costados. Al centro hay un extraño hombre que, sin decir nada, solo juzgando por la mirada, decide mandar a Toyohisa por una puerta sin que pueda oponerse.
Toyohisa aparecerá en un bosque, aún conservando las heridas que tenía a punto antes de morir, donde será descubierto por dos elfos, los cuales deciden llevarlo a unas ruinas para que los "Drifters" se encarguen de él. Los Drifters resultarán ser seres de otro mundo que fueron traídos a este nuevo mundo, siendo apodados por los habitantes como Drifters. Todos comparten la misma experiencia de haber estado a punto de morir para luego ser teletransportados a la extraña habitación blanca con el extraño hombre.
Oda Nobunaga ordenará que curen a Toyohisa para que luego tome descanso, pero la tranquilidad durará poco cuando los Drifters sientan el olor a batalla, dándose cuenta de que el pueblo de los elfos fue atacado, por lo que deciden contraatacar para luego hacerse con el poder de la aldea.
Al parecer, los elfos ejercen como esclavos del ejército por antes haber perdido una guerra. Además, tanto hobbits como humanos en este mundo están en peligro de desaparecer. Los Drifters tienen en su sangre el poder de la lucha, la estrategia de ganar batallas y las ansias de poder, siendo personajes históricos, por lo que tratarán de tomar el poder del mundo en que ahora se encuentran todos ellos.
The story puts us in the shoes of Shimazu Toyohisa, a samurai warrior who, after wounding an important commander in battle – while injured himself – decides to return to his hometown, only to face imminent death. However, instead of dying, he’s teleported to a strange white hall lined with doors on all sides. At its centre stands a peculiar man who, without uttering a word and judging by gaze alone, sends Toyohisa through one of the doors before he can resist.
Toyohisa awakens in a forest, still bearing the mortal wounds he’d sustained, where he’s discovered by two elves. They take him to some ruins to be handed over to the "Drifters". These Drifters turn out to be beings from other worlds, brought to this new realm and dubbed "Drifters" by its inhabitants. All share the same experience: being on the verge of death before being teleported to that eerie white room with the mysterious man.
Oda Nobunaga orders Toyohisa’s treatment and subsequent rest, but the peace is short-lived when the Drifters catch the scent of battle – realising the elves’ village has been attacked. They launch a counterattack, ultimately seizing control of the settlement.
It seems the elves serve as slaves to the army after losing a prior war. Furthermore, both hobbits and humans in this world face extinction. The Drifters, being historical figures, carry battlelust, tactical brilliance and thirst for power in their blood. Now united in this strange world, they’ll scheme to claim dominion over it.

Tengo entendido que este OVA vino como regalo con el tomo 5 del manga. Quiero destacar mucho que la animación es ampliamente reconocible, tiene un estilo de arte muy característico que posiblemente guste a muchos, además si te gustan los animes seinen y las peleas con mucha sangre, este anime será para ti. Seguramente si te gustó Hellsing y quieres algo similar, acá lo encontrarás.
Me gusta cómo se plantea el worldbuilding, aunque no se muestra mucho en la OVA podemos hacernos una idea de lo bien planeado que está, como el hecho de que los Drifters, al venir de otro mundo, es obvio que no entiendan por ejemplo el idioma de este mundo. Muchos habrán visto isekais donde los protagonistas son teletransportados e igualmente entienden todo como si nada, cuando se supone que están en otro mundo.
Creo que si tienes un amplio conocimiento de las grandes figuras japonesas puede que te guste muchísimo este anime. Yo, la verdad, tengo mucho desconocimiento acerca del tema y de las eras en las que peleaban y todo eso. Aunque creo que para comprender la historia, no será necesario tener conocimiento de lo anteriormente mencionado.
También quiero resaltar las peleas: son un lujo, llenas de sangre y sin censura, para luego cerrar con un final que te deja con ganas de más. Los 40 minutos de duración se te hacen bastante cortos. Tocará verse el anime de 13 capítulos y las otras tres OVAs que continúan la historia. Lo único malo es que creo que el anime no está terminado y no sé si el manga está terminado tampoco; según leí por Reddit, el autor es un poco vago acerca del tema.
Creo que después de escribir esto, procederé a verme el anime. Así que, con permiso, me despido.
From what I understand, this OVA was included as a bonus with volume 5 of the manga. I particularly want to highlight how instantly recognisable the animation is - it has such a distinctive art style that will likely appeal to many viewers. Moreover, if you enjoy seinen anime and bloody, violent fights, this will absolutely be your cup of tea. If you liked Hellsing and want something similar, you'll find it here.
I really appreciate the worldbuilding approach. While the OVA doesn't show much, we can tell how well thought-out it is - like how the Drifters, coming from another world, logically shouldn't understand this world's language. Many isekai shows have protagonists who get transported yet understand everything perfectly, which makes no sense when they're supposedly in another world.
If you're well-versed in Japanese historical figures, you'll probably adore this anime. Personally, I'm quite ignorant about that subject matter and the historical periods these warriors come from. That said, I don't think you need that background knowledge to follow the story.
The fight scenes deserve special mention - they're absolutely glorious, full of uncensored bloodshed, building to a cliffhanger ending that leaves you desperate for more. The 40-minute runtime flies by. I'll need to watch the 13-episode anime series and the three additional OVAs that continue the story. The only downside is that I don't believe the anime is complete, and I'm unsure about the manga's status either - according to Reddit discussions, the author has been rather lax about it.
After writing this, I think I'll go ahead and watch the anime now. If you'll excuse me, I'll take my leave.
