The truth is that I wasn't planning to review this, well, actually I wasn't even planning to see this film. But my dad asked me about it and I said, why not? So the two of us can watch it together. My dad is a big fan of Mazinger Z, it's the series of his childhood and the one he grew up with, I figured he would be excited to see that mythical robot for the last time; I, on the other hand, got to see it when I was very young so I have no memories of the series but what I do know is that I owned a DVD with several loose chapters, already lost somewhere in the underworld. My goal was achieved, my dad was entertained by the film, a sign of that is when he puts his mobile phone aside and focuses only on what he is watching, something he did from the beginning. And now as a side effect, here I am doing this review.
La verdad es que no tenía planeado hacer una reseña sobre esto, bueno, en realidad ni tenía planeado ver esta película. Pero mi papá me preguntó acerca de ella y dije, ¿por qué no? Así la vemos los dos juntos. Mi papá es un gran aficionado a Mazinger Z, es la serie de su infancia y con la que creció, supuse que le haría ilusión volver a ver por última vez a ese mítico robot; yo en cambio, llegué a verla siendo muy pequeño así que tengo nulos recuerdos de dicha serie pero lo que sí tengo claro es que poseía un DVD con varios capítulos sueltos, ya perdido en algún lugar del inframundo. Mi objetivo fue cumplido, mi papá se entretuvo con la película, señal de eso es cuando deja su teléfono celular a un lado y se enfoca solo en lo que está viendo, algo que hizo desde el principio. Y ahora como efecto colateral, heme aquí haciendo esta reseña.
The film tells the story of a grown-up Koji Kabuto, the famous pilot who wiped out the horde of enemies of the evil Dr. Hell, and who now lives in peace and quiet working for the good of the world as a scientist. Faced with a new threat caused by the appearance of a new giant Mazinger called Infinity, which has the power to turn into an angel or a demon depending on who uses it, Koji Kabuto will have to consider whether to return to piloting the beloved Mazinger Z or let everything be thrown into chaos by the return of Dr. Hell. The plot has some philosophical touches and multiverse themes, as well as unnecessary scientific mumbo-jumbo.
La película nos muestra la historia de un Koji Kabuto ya crecido, el famoso piloto que acabó con toda la horda de enemigos del malvado Dr. Hell, y que ahora vive en tranquilidad trabajando para el bienestar del mundo como un científico. Ante una nueva amenaza ocasionada por la aparición de un nuevo Mazinger gigantesco llamado Infinity, que tiene el poder de volverse en ángel o en demonio según quién lo use, Koji Kabuto tendrá que plantearse si volver a pilotar el queridísimo Mazinger Z o dejar que todo se suma en caos por la vuelta del Dr.Hell. La trama cuenta con algunos toques filosóficos y temas relacionados con multiversos, además de habladurías científicas innecesarias.
One thing that really stands out is that the film doesn't feel like a film, but an extended Mazinger Z episode, taking all the elements that characterised the anime and putting it into a nostalgic mash-up, so we find ourselves in our viewing with mecha fights, giant robots against other giant robots mixed with unbridled action, that you might not even realise what's happening on screen, it also has its "comic" moments with that old humour of that time serving to release tension, finding very funny the fact that a female robot throws her breasts being that these are missiles, the soundtrack is good and accompanies in a good way all the course of the film, although the main complaint of my dad is that they did not put the Mazinger song well in the moments when it sounded, since they only put the theme without voice. The animation is a thousand times superior to that of the time.
Algo que destaca mucho es que la película no parezca una película, sino un capítulo extendido de Mazinger Z, tomando todos los elementos que caracterizaban el anime y poniéndolo en un revoltijo de nostalgia, así que nos encontramos en nuestro visionado con peleas de mechas, robots gigantes contra otros robots gigantes mezcladas con acción desenfrenada, que quizás ni te llegues a enterar de lo que está pasando en pantalla, también tiene sus momentos "cómicos" con ese humor viejo de aquella época sirviendo para liberar tensión, encontrando muy divertido el hecho de que un robot femenino lance sus pechos siendo que estos son misiles, la banda sonora es buena y acompaña de buena manera todo el transcurso de la película, aunque la principal queja de mi papá es que no pusieran la canción de Mazinger bien en los momentos en que sonaba, ya que solo ponían el tema sin voz. Hay que recalcar también la animación que es mil veces superior a la de aquella época.
This work fulfils its main objective of imparting nostalgia left and right, when you see Koji Kabuto again after so long you feel at home, like you're a kid again, you're immediately drawn into the story, you want to see his last mission, his denouement. The rollercoaster of emotions starts from the very first minute, starting with a battle between Big Mazinger and the classic villains Baron Ashler and Count Brocken along with their robot henchmen, reminding us of the best moments of the original anime right off the bat. Nothing better than hearing my dad say: "This is better than Naruto and Dragon Ball".
Esta obra cumple con su objetivo principal de impartir nostalgia a diestra y siniestra, cuando uno vuelve a ver a Koji Kabuto después de tanto tiempo te sientes como en casa, como si fueras un niño otra vez, enseguida te introduces a la historia, quieres ver su última misión, su desenlace. La montaña rusa de emociones comienza desde el primer minuto, ya empezando tenemos una batalla entre Gran Mazinger contra los clásicos villanos el Barón Ashler y Conde Brocken junto sus montones de robots secuaces, haciendo que recordemos de buenas a primeras los mejores momentos del anime original. Nada mejor que haber escuchado a mi padre decir: "Esto sí es mejor que Naruto y Dragon Ball".
The big flaw this film has, is that it assumes that the person watching it already knows the characters beforehand, in my particular case I didn't know most of them and had to resort several times to asking my dad, this could have been solved by simply adding a short introduction introducing the characters. Another smaller flaw is when the characters start talking about philosophical and scientific topics without any sense, mentioning complex things just for the sake of mentioning them, those parts felt extremely slow and boring. All in all, it is a good entertainment product, there is no innovation and it respects the original aspects of the anime.
El gran defecto que esta película posee, es que asume que la persona que la está viendo ya conoce los personajes de antemano, en mi caso en particular desconocía la gran mayoría de ellos y tuve que recurrir varias veces a preguntarle a mi papá, esto lo hubieran solucionado sencillamente añadiendo una pequeña introducción presentando a los personajes. Otro defecto más pequeño es cuando los personajes comienzan a hablar de temas filosóficos y científicos sin sentido alguno, mencionando cosas complejas solo por mencionarlas, esas partes se sentían sumamente lentas y aburridas. A pesar de todo, es un buen producto de entretenimiento, no hay innovación alguna y respeta los aspectos originales del anime.
