Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, damas y caballeros. ¿Cómo están? ¿Cómo se encuentran el día de hoy? Yo por acá me ando preguntando cuándo será que me pondré a hacer las actividades de la universidad; debería hacer por lo menos una esta semana para ir adelantando, después se me puede acumular todo. Mientras tanto, he ido haciendo lo de siempre: buscando películas interesantes por aquí y por allá. Esta vez tocó ver una película del prestigioso estudio A1 Pictures, sinónimo de calidad; con solo leer ese nombre en la ficha técnica, pensé para mí mismo.
Lo que me llamó particularmente la atención de esta obra es que se ve que su intención desde el principio es mezclar la fantasía con el misterio; se nos vienen a la mente aquellas fábulas o cuentos de hadas también, pero tratando temas muy serios. Luego de finalizar la película, investigué un poco y me encontré con que está basada en un libro que quizás me dé ganas de leer, porque desde ahorita digo que siento que faltó algo, un poquito para que fuera mucho mejor. Aunque algunos usuarios dicen que el manga está bastante bien y rellena lo que le falta a la película, veré qué me leo después.
Esta obra está basada principalmente en El lobo y las siete cabritillas, para que te vayas haciendo más o menos una idea, aunque creo que lo usan más como una "excusa" para contar algo totalmente diferente, pero no como algo malo; podríamos llamarlo el recurso principal para ejercer el misterio. Así que, sin más dilación, hablemos un poco acerca de Lonely Castle in the Mirror.
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How are you? How are you doing today? As for me, I’ve been wondering when I’ll finally get around to doing my university assignments—I should do at least one this week to get ahead, otherwise everything might pile up. In the meantime, I’ve been doing the usual: searching for interesting films here and there. This time, I ended up watching a film by the prestigious studio A1 Pictures, synonymous with quality. Just seeing that name in the credits made me think to myself…
What particularly caught my attention about this work is that it clearly aims to blend fantasy with mystery from the very beginning. It brings to mind those classic fables or fairy tales, yet it tackles very serious themes. After finishing the film, I did a bit of research and discovered it’s based on a book—one I might fancy reading, because even now, I feel like something was missing, just a little something to make it even better. Though some users say the manga is quite good and fills in what the film lacks, so I’ll see what I end up reading next.
This work is primarily based on The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats, to give you a rough idea—though I reckon they use it more as an "excuse" to tell a completely different story. Not in a bad way, mind you; you could call it the central device for building the mystery. So without further ado, let’s talk a bit about Lonely Castle in the Mirror.

La película nos pone en la piel de Kokoro, una chica introvertida que está en primero de bachillerato, pero la cual no asiste a la escuela debido a que hay una compañera de clases que le hace la vida imposible; por lo tanto, toma tutorías privadas para poder hacer que se vuelva a integrar a la sociedad o volver al instituto.
Un día, en su cuarto, el espejo de Kokoro comenzará a brillar; curiosa, introducirá su mano para luego ser jalada al otro lado, donde le esperará una extraña niña con una máscara de lobo. Kokoro se encuentra ahora en un gran castillo, el cual está rodeado de agua por todos lados. El Lobo le dirá que entre, que el juego tiene que comenzar.
Una vez dentro del castillo, en unas escaleras se encontrarán esperando otros seis chicos; todos han sido traídos de la misma forma y con el mismo objetivo: jugar el juego del Lobo. Las reglas son sencillas: solo se puede entrar al castillo a través del espejo de 9:00 a. m. a 5:00 p. m. La misión de los chicos es encontrar una llave, la cual otorgará cualquier deseo que pidan a quien la encuentre; la fecha límite la tienen en marzo.
Hay una advertencia clara: si se quedan después de las 5:00 p. m., aparecerá el Lobo y se los comerá. No importa si todos intentan irse; una vez rota la regla, no hay vuelta atrás.
Kokoro entablará amistad con los chicos del castillo y se dará cuenta de que tienen mucho en común; compartirá anécdotas y, además, encontrará, de cierta manera, un refugio de todo lo que le pasa en su vida cotidiana. Todo será muy bonito, pero si alguien llega a pedir un deseo, todos olvidarán lo vivido en el castillo y las personas que conocieron.

The film puts us in the shoes of Kokoro, an introverted girl in her first year of sixth form who no longer attends school due to a classmate making her life unbearable. She now receives private tutoring to help reintegrate into society or return to school.
One day in her bedroom, Kokoro's mirror begins to glow. Curious, she reaches out her hand only to be pulled through to the other side, where a strange girl wearing a wolf mask awaits her. Kokoro now finds herself in a grand castle surrounded by water on all sides. The Wolf tells her to enter - the game must begin.
Once inside the castle, six other children wait on the stairs. They've all been brought here in the same way, with the same objective: to play the Wolf's game. The rules are simple:
- Entry to the castle is only possible through the mirror between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm
- The children must find a key that will grant any wish to whoever discovers it
- They have until March to succeed
There's one clear warning: if anyone remains after 5:00 pm, the Wolf will appear and devour them. It doesn't matter if they all try to leave - once the rule is broken, there's no going back.
Kokoro befriends the castle's children and realises they have much in common. She shares stories with them and, in a way, finds refuge from her everyday struggles. Everything seems wonderful - but should anyone make a wish, they'll all forget their time in the castle and the people they met there.

Esta obra podría decir que tarda un poco en empezar porque vemos a los personajes conociéndose y pasar tiempo juntos; no sabemos nada acerca de ellos o por qué están allí. Es poco a poco, conforme va transcurriendo la película, que nos damos cuenta de que todos son iguales: todos sufren en su vida cotidiana y principalmente en la escuela. Por lo que luego irán apareciendo temas como el bullying, el acoso escolar, inclusive maltrato familiar, llegando a tocar temas tan fuertes como la violación o hacer referencia de forma sutil al suicidio.
El castillo tiene un claro propósito, y es servir de lugar seguro para estos chicos; para que tengan un lugar a donde acudir, además de para que tengan amigos con los cuales relacionarse y poder compartir su desahogo. Lo único malo de esta película podría decirse que nada más muestran en específico el trasfondo de Kokoro; los demás quedan un poco relegados a un segundo plano y su trasfondo es nada más revelado en forma de flashbacks. Aunque la escena no está para nada mal, quisiera tener un poco más de información acerca de lo que les ocurría.
Posiblemente discutible fácilmente también es el final. Esperaba de cierta forma que mostraran qué pasaba con todos los chicos en el futuro: si logran reunirse fuera del castillo o si son felices viviendo la vida que siempre quisieron vivir. Al final solo nos quedamos con sus sueños y propósitos, menos con Kokoro, que sí se nos muestra su desenlace.
Quiero decir también que el misterio está bastante bien planteado: se te van dejando pistas a lo largo de toda la película para que te des cuenta de todo lo que ocurre, lo que lo hace magnífico. Me encanta cuando tengo una teoría y resulta que tengo razón.
One could say this work takes a while to properly begin, as we see the characters getting to know each other and spending time together without initially understanding their backgrounds or why they're there. Gradually, as the film progresses, we realise they're all the same - each suffering in their daily lives, particularly at school. This naturally introduces weighty themes like bullying, school harassment, even domestic abuse, eventually touching on matters as severe as sexual assault or making subtle references to suicide.
The castle serves a clear purpose: to provide a safe haven for these children. It gives them somewhere to turn to, friends to connect with, and an outlet to share their burdens. If there's one flaw, it's that the film specifically focuses on Kokoro's backstory while the others are somewhat relegated to secondary roles, their backgrounds only revealed through flashbacks. Though these scenes are by no means poorly done, I would have liked more detail about what the others were going through.
The ending is perhaps easily debatable too. I rather hoped they'd show what became of all the children in the future - whether they reunited outside the castle or found happiness living the lives they'd always wanted. Instead, we're left only with their dreams and aspirations, except for Kokoro, whose resolution we do get to see.
I must also mention the mystery is exceptionally well-constructed. The film plants clues throughout its runtime, allowing you to piece everything together - which makes it brilliant. There's nothing quite like having a theory and discovering you were right all along.

En conclusión, tenía un buen tiempo sin ver algo sobre misterio. ¿Era lo que me esperaba? Podría decir que no, pero me gustó bastante todo lo que se propone y el mensaje que intenta dar, luchando contra problemáticas difíciles. Lo único es lo que les mencioné antes: que se siente un poco incompleto y, supongo, que habrá que leerse el libro o el manga para comprender un poco mejor todo.
Me encantó cómo se fueron uniendo los cabos al final; fue simplemente espléndido y, además, cuando creías que habías adivinado algo, te meten un giro de tuerca más y… adiós, mente. La música de la película la sentí bastante buena, principalmente siendo de orquesta y, de cierta manera, en ciertos momentos sintiéndose mágica. Estamos en un castillo mágico, así que debe sentirse así.
Hubo un momento en que tocan temas como líneas temporales, y eso hizo interesarme aún más, aunque al final terminara en algo más sencillo que ya había previsto cuando vi lo que le ocurrió a Kokoro. Según mi sistema subjetivo de puntuación, le daría un sólido 7,5/10: una película bastante buena, pero con un final que solo llega a convencer a medias al espectador, quizás dejando con dudas a algunos.
Ahora quiero buscar una película de misterio mejor. ¿Tienes alguna que me recomiendes? Te leo acá abajo y me despido por el día de hoy.
It had been quite some time since I'd watched anything mystery-related. Was it what I expected? I'd say not exactly, but I thoroughly enjoyed its ambitions and the message it tried to convey in tackling such difficult issues. My only gripe, as I mentioned earlier, is that it feels slightly incomplete - I suppose one would need to read the book or manga to fully grasp everything.
I absolutely loved how all the pieces came together in the end - it was simply splendid. Just when you thought you'd figured something out, they'd throw in another twist and... mind blown. The film's orchestral score felt particularly good, with certain moments carrying a magical quality that perfectly matched the enchanted castle setting.
There was a point where they introduced elements like timelines, which piqued my interest even further - though ultimately it resolved more simply than I'd anticipated after seeing what happened to Kokoro. On my subjective rating scale, I'd give it a solid 7.5/10: a rather good film let down slightly by an ending that only half-convinces the viewer, potentially leaving some with lingering questions.
Now I'm on the hunt for a better mystery film - any recommendations? I'll read your suggestions below and bid you farewell for today.
