This scene was really exhilarating for me to write, and also allowed me to grind one of my narrative axes! I do not enjoy the action movie torture scene. Obviously, I have moral objections to torture, but I also have strategic objections as well. Torture has been proven to not actually give answers, it just gives you the kind of lies the subject thinks you want to hear.
Given that I wanted Chuck to be an actually competent interrogator, I did research into what it actually takes to get useable intel from prisoners. You need to convince them that you are their only way out of their problem. They can't go back to their old side, and they don't want to rot in a prison cell, but maybe they want a new name and a passport to another country, maybe they want their wife and kids to get those too...
I have to be honest, writing this scene in a more realistic fashion, the way US agents actually end up getting information was way more electric than if I had simply done a bog standard "interrogator keeps hurting subject until they spill the beans" kind of scene.
Thank you for your time, consider my axe ground.
