The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film directed by Henry Selick, and produced and conceived by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, a skeleton who lives in "Halloween Town" who opens a portal to "Christmas Town" and decides to celebrate the holiday, with disastrous results.
The film's conception began with a poem written by Tim Burton in 1982, while he was working as an animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation. With the success of Vincent in the same year, Burton began to consider developing The Nightmare Before Christmas as either a short film or 30-minute television special. Over the years, Burton's ideas steadily progressed, and he enlisted Disney studios to produce the film as his directorial debut. Production started in July 1991 in San Francisco; Disney released the film through Touchstone Pictures because the studio believed the film would be too dark and scary for children.
The Nightmare Before Christmas was not a box office success upon its initial release, but gradually gained popularity after its home video release, becoming one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time. It is now considered a holiday classic and has been re-released multiple times by Walt Disney Pictures. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and won a Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film.
The film has since been adapted into various other forms, including a video game, a stage musical, and several merchandise items.
Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the most perfectly executed films ever made. The story is creative and unique, the characters are lovable and relatable, and the overall aesthetic is just gorgeous. The film perfectly captures the feeling of both Christmas and Halloween, and does so in a way that is both fun and heartwarming. The voice acting is top-notch, particularly from Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington. The songs are catchy and perfectly capture the tone of the film. The stop-motion animation is some of the best I've ever seen. Every frame is meticulously crafted and the whole film has a level of detail that is truly astounding. Nightmare Before Christmas is a timeless classic that is sure to delight viewers of all ages for many years to come.
