It had been a long time since I last played around with textures, and reconnecting with that process was truly rewarding. I then focused on lighting, aiming to bring strong visual impact to the final piece. Now, let me show you a more detailed breakdown of the creative process!
Hola comunidad de Splinterlands y Alien Art, hoy me animé a experimentar con texturas de fuego para trabajar sobre una base anatómica y lograr diferencias interesantes utilizando distintas herramientas. Hacía mucho tiempo que no jugaba con texturas, y redescubrir ese proceso fue muy enriquecedor. Luego enfoqué el trabajo en la iluminación, buscando darle fuerza visual a la imagen final. ¡Ahora los invito a ver una explicación más detallada del proceso creativo!
With the base established, I took the image into Photoshop and applied a Gradient Map layer. I selected a custom gradient in shades of deep yellow, deep oranges and touches of pure white to illuminate the points of greatest luminous impact. This choice was not accidental: each colour was intended to simulate the internal temperature of the flames. With a 100% smoothed solid gradient, the body began to take on a glowing internal appearance, as if the skin were translucent and lit from within.
Con la base ya establecida, llevé la imagen a Photoshop y apliqué una capa de Mapa de degradado. Seleccioné un degradado personalizado en tonos de amarillo intenso, naranjas profundos y toques de blanco puro para iluminar los puntos de mayor impacto lumínico. Esta elección no fue casual: cada color tenía el propósito de simular la temperatura interna de las llamas. Con un degradado sólido suavizado al 100%, el cuerpo comenzó a adquirir una apariencia interna brillante, como si la piel fuera translúcida y estuviera iluminada desde adentro.
One of the iconic elements is his mask. To create it, I imported a photograph of a purple satin fabric with pleats. This texture was essential: I wanted the character to retain a certain elegance and mystery, but also to give the impression that his clothing remains intact despite being shrouded in fire.
I used the Free Transform tool and layer masks to shape the cloth to fit the contours of the face. I then cut out the silhouette with precision and added a slight inner shadow to make it feel floating, as if it was held in place by sheer will and warmth.
Uno de los elementos icónicos es su máscara. Para crearla, importé una fotografía de una tela de raso púrpura con pliegues. Esta textura era esencial: quería que el personaje conservara cierta elegancia y misterio, pero también que diera la impresión de que su vestimenta se mantiene intacta pese a estar envuelto en fuego.
Utilicé la herramienta de Transformación libre y máscaras de capa para darle forma a la tela y adaptarla al contorno del rostro. Luego, recorté la silueta con precisión y añadí una leve sombra interna para que se sintiera flotante, como si estuviera sostenida por pura voluntad y calor.
This is where the magic began. I used custom fire brushes and overlay effects with sunburst textures to build a more dynamic silhouette. I went layer by layer, painting and blurring edges, until the flames seemed to dance from the back, shoulders and skull.
I also incorporated white glows and gold highlights, applying filters such as Motion Blur to achieve a sense of vibration and unstable power. This step was key to breaking the rigidity of the human figure and projecting an uncontrollable energy. The flames were not to be decorative, but part of his identity.
Aquí empezó la magia. Usé pinceles personalizados de fuego y efectos de overlay con texturas de explosiones solares para construir una silueta más dinámica. Fui capa por capa, pintando y difuminando bordes, hasta que las llamas parecieran bailar desde la espalda, los hombros y el cráneo.
También incorporé brillos blancos y reflejos dorados, aplicando filtros como Desenfoque de movimiento para lograr una sensación de vibración y poder inestable. Este paso fue clave para romper la rigidez de la figura humana y proyectar una energía incontrolable. Las llamas no debían ser decorativas, sino parte de su identidad.
I then added the trousers and scraps of fabric and used a combination of clipping masks, soft brushes and blending modes such as Multiply to maintain the texture of the purple trousers without dulling the overall luminosity of the fiery body. The shoulder cape was worked with dark leather texture, faded towards the flames to simulate how physical matter degrades when in constant contact with heat. I was looking for that hybrid effect between something tangible and the volatile.
Luego añadí los pantalones y los retazos de tela y utilicé una combinación de máscaras de recorte, pinceles suaves y modos de fusión como Multiplicar para mantener la textura del pantalón púrpura sin apagar la luminosidad general del cuerpo ígneo. La capa del hombro fue trabajada con textura de cuero oscuro, difuminada hacia las llamas para simular cómo la materia física se degrada al estar en contacto constante con el calor. Buscaba ese efecto híbrido entre algo tangible y lo volátil.
With the character almost finished, I changed the initial grey background for a white marble texture. This contrast was fundamental. I wanted the background image of the person to be removed, so I selected it and expanded its pixels and filled in the content. I applied an Exposure layer and a Brightness/Contrast layer to the character to adjust it to the new lighting of the environment. The marble not only gave neutrality, but also acted as a contrast to the living fire.
Con el personaje casi terminado, cambié el fondo gris inicial por una textura de mármol blanco. Este contraste era fundamental. Quería que la imagen del fondo de la persona sea eliminada, así que la seleccione y expandí sus píxeles y rellene el contenido. Apliqué una capa de Exposición y otra de Brillo/Contraste al personaje para ajustarlo a la nueva iluminación del entorno. El mármol no solo dio neutralidad, sino que también actuó como un contrastador del fuego viviente.
