Hello Splinterlands and Alien art friends! After taking a well-deserved break from both work and design, this week I'm back to the challenge with new energy. I decided to take a thorough approach with this design, exploring one of my favourite terrains: dark cards. It's been a while since I've been immersed in this style, so it was an experience I really enjoyed. The chosen card was Wailing Wraith, a card that already gave me a certain ghostly, demented and powerful vibe. From there I decided to take it to realism, but without losing its essence: a corpse-like figure, floating, with magic fire in her hair and surrounded by a purple and golden aura.

Después de tomarme un merecido descanso tanto del trabajo como del diseño, esta semana regreso al reto con nuevas energías . Decidí acercarme de forma minuciosa con este diseño, explorando uno de mis terrenos favoritos: las cartas oscuras. Hace tiempo que no me sumergía en este estilo tan propio de mí, así que fue una experiencia que disfruté muchísimo. La elegida fue Wailing Wraith, una carta que ya me transmitía cierta vibra fantasmal, demente y poderosa. A partir de ahí decidí llevarla al realismo, pero sin perder su esencia: una figura cadavérica, flotante, con fuego mágico en el cabello y rodeada de un aura púrpura y dorada.
Before starting, I put together a collage of visual references that helped me to establish the colour palette and materials: fire, gold, purple fabrics, skeletons, aggressive expressions, and feminine details. These images were key in deciding what textures to apply and how to model the character's anatomy, as the original is completely stylised.
I took as a base a photorealistic zombie model that I found ideal to recreate the body, giving it the rigid but threatening posture of the original spectre.
Antes de empezar, armé un collage de referencias visuales que me sirvieron para establecer la paleta de colores y los materiales: fuego, oro, telas violetas, esqueletos, expresiones agresivas, y detalles femeninos. Estas imágenes fueron clave para decidir qué texturas aplicar y cómo modelar la anatomía del personaje, ya que el original está completamente estilizado.
Tomé como base un modelo de zombie fotorealista que me pareció ideal para recrear el cuerpo, dándole la postura rígida pero amenazante del espectro original.
One of the key features of the character is his ghostly look. For this, I painted over a new layer in Overlay mode with a bright light blue colour, and then blurred to create that light effect that seems to come from the skull.
Una de las claves del personaje es su mirada fantasmal. Para esto, pinté sobre una nueva capa en modo Superponer con un color celeste brillante, y luego desenfoqué para crear ese efecto de luz que parece salir desde el cráneo.
The scarf was constructed from a real cloth, deformed, coloured and adapted with a layer mask to fit the head. I then gave it volume with soft highlights using the white brush in normal mode. The hair was replaced by a fire texture at first, but then I painted a digital version that replicated the style of the original sprite, with a spectral finish in shades of turquoise/blue-green and blurred towards the edges.One of the key features of the character is his ghostly look. El pañuelo fue construido a partir de una tela real, deformada, coloreada y adaptada con máscara de capa para ajustarse a la cabeza. Luego le di volumen con luces suaves usando el pincel blanco en modo normal.El cabello fue reemplazado por una textura de fuego al principio, pero luego pinté una versión digital que replicara el estilo del sprite original, con un acabado espectral en tonos turquesa/verde azulado y difuminado hacia los bordes.
The costume was one of the most complex parts. I assembled it piece by piece using real purple fabric textures, which I deformed, duplicated and cut out until they fit the body. I used motion blur in some sections to simulate dynamism.
I then applied cast shadows with soft brushes and layers of brightness/contrast adjustment to match the fabrics to the body and generate a coherent visual reading.
El traje fue una de las partes más complejas. Lo armé pieza por pieza utilizando texturas reales de tela violeta, que fui deformando, duplicando y recortando hasta que encajaran en el cuerpo. Utilicé desenfoque de movimiento en algunas secciones para simular dinamismo.
Luego apliqué sombras proyectadas con pinceles suaves y capas de ajuste de brillo/contraste para empastar las telas con el cuerpo y generar una lectura visual coherente.
My favourite part: working on the final atmosphere. I applied an Exposure layer, a Curves layer and a Levels layer to control the overall light balance. I painted with layer masks to subtly lighten the lower parts of the body and give contrast with the shiny hair.
Finally, I added a grey background colour to make it easier to evaluate values and visual errors, something I always recommend.
Mi parte favorita: trabajar la atmósfera final. Apliqué una capa de Exposición, otra de Curvas y una de Niveles para controlar el balance de luces generales. Pinté con máscaras de capa para iluminar sutilmente las partes bajas del cuerpo y dar contraste con el cabello brillante.
Finalmente, incorporé un color gris de fondo para poder evaluar los valores y errores visuales más fácilmente, algo que recomiendo siempre.
