This week, HivePH rolled out the first art contest! I am so thrilled to be a part of this contest because art is what I love doing as a hobby. Since I was a kid, I am always part of artsy contests like poster making, doing props for theaters, and painting murals. So, this contest initiated by @jude.villarta and @sensiblecast brought memories back.
The goal of this contest is to bring out our creativity, celebrate art, and invite more artsy peeps to the community. The contest will run for four weeks with different themes to choose from. For this week, I chose the theme Sailor!
Of course, who else is the star of all time, my Grumpea! So, without further ado, let's start sketching!
Sketching The Concept
So I was thinking about what Grumpea would do if he wanted to go sailing. He probably just grab a carton box and make himself a ship. Ya boi is a cheap stake so he will not buy a damn ship for himself.
He will be looking for a treasure on an far away island. I wonder who planted those coconut trees, lol. For the background, I added some clouds and birds. Oh, notice the jumping fish? That would be a flounder fish, in Filipino we call it talampuke.
Background and the Carton Ship
For the background, I used Gradient tool to make a smooth transition of the color for the sky. I used the most natural color of the sky. It is easier to just use the color pick tool to copy the color from a photo of sky. I adjusted the color to match the whole picture.
For accuracy, I searched in Google a picture of a carton box. So, I just followed how a carton should look like. I added some donut floaties and rope on the side so that it would appear as if a ship. The binoculars are also from a random reference on the internet. I chose the color red this time instead of the typical brown. Again, I just copy pasted Grumpea from another file to make all Grumpea the same throughout the collection.
Banner, the Ocean, and Flounder Fish
To have a layered look for the ocean, I used different shades of blue. I chose the darker color for the deeper part of the ocean. I also lowered the opacity of the first layer so that it would appear as if it is transparent like water. In total, I used four shades of blue. I made it as close as the color of the ocean. I put some details on the waves such as froths lines and bubbles. For the banner, I was thinking of a white fabric with a stick pole. The logo is an anchor with a stem stcking out like Grumpea's.
The fish was inspired from the Disney movie, The Little Mermaid! Wanderin' free, wish I could be, part of that world~ 🎶🤣
Hey, noticed Grumpea's sailor hat? Officially a sailor! Yipee~
Have you every wonder in movies why is there coconut trees on a far away island? Who the freak would spend time just to plant those? HAHA! Just kidding. Of course, it is for aesthetic purposes. Yeah, so I copied that concept so that it would look like an island. I added some pink starfishes inspired by Patrick the Star, and a blue shell. The treasure box is a typical, weather worn-out, wood chest.
More Details~ Almost Done!
More details such as the clouds and the birds. To make life easier, just copy paste those elements and adjust the position and the size. I put smaller clouds farther from Grumpea. I imagine those birds are seagulls so I put a black tip details on the wings. I kind of blurred them out, too. Added shadows here and there for refining. Checked for more small details, and Ahoy!
