Two women, their voices breaking, were talking about a surgery that cost «a kidney», something impossible for their family. My heart skipped a beat. That night I didn't sleep; I only thought about her eyes, which I imagined filled with clouds.
The next day, I contacted the hospital director, an old acquaintance from past battles. I explained the situation and the transfer I would make to cover the entire cost. His silence on the other end of the phone spoke volumes. When he finally spoke to offer me some kind of public recognition, I interrupted him in the calmest voice I could muster.
“Cover it all. And yes, no publicity, please.”
