It looks like the economy is not favoring the masses at all. Everything is hard. We are earning very little, and a government job is no longer enough. The Nigerian government initially announced that it would increase NYSC corps members’ salaries to ₦77,000 from the previous amount—but that promise was not fulfilled.
One day, a corps member took to social media to complain bitterly. She expressed how the stipend they were receiving was too small to cater for transportation, let alone food and basic needs. She was almost in tears, and her frustration reflected what many were feeling.
As expected, backlash followed. Someone from the NYSC command reportedly told her to take down the video, even going as far as asking if she was out of her mind. But something different happened this time—people stood by her. A popular activist, Omoyele Sowore, voiced his support and backed her publicly.
Her courage reached the highest office. The president called her to the villa, where she was escorted by a few activists, including Sowore. Her boldness and voice led to the immediate implementation of the ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members.
She stood out. She spoke up. And she made a difference.
She didn't beg to differ!
