Am Versus I’m
Disclaimer: I’m here to teach, not judge. Feel free to learn without any guilt., even if you’re seated on any of my shaky tables.😉
Now that we are clear on that, let’s delve into the teaching proper.
‘Am’ is not the same as ‘I’m’. while ‘I'm' is the contracted form of I am, ‘am’ on the other hand, is a form of the verb ‘to be’ and it is only used with the personal pronoun ‘I’.
The verb ‘to be’ expresses a state of being, identity or condition. Examples of the verb ‘to be’ are: is, are, am. But today, our focus is on ‘am’.
I know they both sound alike, but please resist the urge to begin a sentence with ‘am’ UNLESS you’re asking a question.
Do not say:
Am going to school.❌
Say:
I am going to school.✅
I’m going to school.✅
Other Ways to Use am:
✅When showing identity:
I am a teacher.
I am Paul.
✅When showing emotion or condition:
I am happy.
I am tired.
✅When showing location:
I am at home.
✅When describing an action:
I am teaching.
If you observe closely, you will notice that ‘I’ and ‘am’ are a couple and what English has joined together, let no one put asunder.
This is where I will draw the curtain.
If you still find it tricky to differentiate between ‘am’ and ‘I’m’, here’s a tip:
👉Take a break from saying ‘I’m’. Instead, say ‘I am’. With time you will understand the correct usage.
I hope this helps 😊.
Keep learning!
