Attention! Attention!! Attention!!!
If you have ever done this, English forgives you today because it was done in ignorance. I believe you’re open to correction and will not do it again.
I’m talking about overstressing the exclamation mark. One is enough to pass the message.
Is that clear? Thank you. Let’s continue.
Still on punctuations, let’s briefly highlight the functions of the following marks:
⭐Exclamation Mark
⭐Colon
⭐Semi-colon
⭐Question Mark
❤️🔥Exclamation Mark(!)
I call this one the ‘emotional mark' because that is exactly what it is. It adds emotion and energy to your sentence
It is used to express surprise, shock, anger, excitement…think of any emotion, think of this mark.
And please, one exclamation mark is enough. Don’t overuse it.
Sentence Application:
✅Wow! This is beautiful!
✅Get out of here!
✅I got the offer!
❤️🔥Colon(:)
A colon is used to introduce things like a list or explanation to enhance clarity.
✅It introduces lists:
There were three items in the basket: a red ball, a blue card and a keychain.
✅It introduces explanations or examples:
Amanda had one assignment: to win the competition.
❤️🔥Semi-colon(;)
✅A semi-colon connects two closely related complete sentences:
It was raining; we decided to stay inside.
✅It can replace a conjunction(and, but, or, etc.) between two independent clauses(complete sentences):
Favour prefers eating beans to rice; I can’t survive without Eba and soup.
❤️🔥Question Mark(?)
First, let’s establish that a question is a type of sentence called, ‘Interrogatory Sentence’ and the presence of the question mark shows that a sentence is a question.
What does it do?
✅It invites response:
What is your name?
✅It signals curiosity:
Are you fine?
