El sonido de la madera al pisarla siempre me generó repelús. Delataba mi camino hacia las escaleras del último piso de aquella casa llena de añoranzas -comencé -. Destacaba entre harapos y trastos viejos, nunca comprendí por qué nadie preguntaba por ellos. Su presencia en aquel espacio húmedo llamó mi atención con una fascinación arrolladora. Era grande, al menos eso pensaba yo. Nunca imaginé que ese espacio marcaría mi futuro. Cada vacación de verano viajábamos al mismo lugar. La casa de una tía-abuela de mi madre en una zona marítima se les antojaba a mis padres, el sitio ideal durante todo el mes de agosto. El olor a encierro que nos recibía al entrar, revolvía lo poco que hubiese comido durante la hora y media de trayecto hasta aquella pequeña ciudad costera. En las esquinas de la casa, las fiestas de arañas entusiasmadas en sus trabajos de decoración fantasmal le daban al lugar un toque siniestro. Pasadas unas horas de arduo trabajo por parte de mis progenitores, la casa lucía habitable para mantenernos durante treinta días enteros.
The sound of the wood when I stepped on it, it always generated repels. I gave away my way to the stairs on the top floor of that house full of longings -I started -. I stood out in rags and old junk, I never understood why nobody asked about them. Its presence in that damp space caught my attention with a sweeping fascination. It was big, at least that’s what I thought. I never imagined that space would mark my future.
Every summer vacation we traveled to the same place. My mother's great-aunt's house in a maritime area my parents wanted, the ideal place for the whole month of August. The smell of confinement that greeted us when we entered, stirred up what little I had eaten during the hour and a half of journey to that small coastal town. In the corners of the house, the parties of spiders excited in their ghostly decoration work, gave the place a sinister touch. After a few hours of hard work by my parents, the house looked habitable to keep us for thirty whole days.
Aquella noche, una nube de vapor me levantó de un respingo, el sol apenas comenzaba a dar los buenos días. Mi cuerpo destilaba agua como una naranja que se exprime completa. Salí de la habitación a tientas entre el sueño y el sudor que chorreaba, el calor se había encaprichado en mostrar todo su potencial - “¡Vaya día nos espera hoy!” - pensé. Apoyándome en la pared, tratando de no hacer ruido, busqué el lavabo. Una puerta angosta pero de buen tamaño se presentó delante de mis ojos, tantos años visitando esa casa y jamás me había percatado de su presencia. La abrí con cuidado, un bombillo solitario pendía de un cable al techo, unido a él, una cuerda de pequeñas pelotas plateadas me impulsó a tirar de ella, la luz y una escalera franqueada por paredes blancas aparecieron ante mí. Subí con desconfianza cerrando la puerta, fue la primera vez que oí el sonido de aquella madera vieja crujir bajo mis pies. En ese sencillo momento mi vida comenzó a pintarse, un mundo nuevo se abrió ante mis inocentes ojos y mi futuro encontró paso en medio de la nada. Ese lugar pasó a ser especial.
That night, a cloud of steam woke me up, the sun just beginning to say good morning. My body distilled water like a full squeezed orange. I groped out of the room between sleep and dripping sweat, the heat had been infatuated in showing its full potential - "What a day awaits us today!" - I thought. Leaning against the wall, trying not to make any noise, I looked for the sink. A narrow door but of good size appeared before my eyes, so many years visiting that house and I had never noticed its presence. I opened it carefully, a single light bulb hung from a cable to the ceiling, attached to it, a string of small silver balls prompted me to pull it, the light and a staircase flanked by white walls appeared before me. I went up suspiciously closing the door, it was the first time I heard the sound of that old wood creaking under my feet. In that simple moment, my life began to take shape, a new world opened up before my innocent eyes and my future found its way into the middle of nowhere. That place became special.
La tía-abuela guardaba un arsenal de tesoros increíbles: bastones con incrustaciones de mármol y vidrio, un magnetófono, muchos discos de vinilo recostados de otros más pequeños, un gramófono, tres radios enmarcados en diseños disparatados, cuadros de diferentes tamaños con rostros, paisajes y mis favoritos con frutas -al crecer descubrí que se llamaban Naturaleza Muerta- trajes que solo había visto en películas antiguas, pelucas, muñecas bien vestidas, cartas, muchas cartas escritas a mano atadas con cintas verdes de terciopelo -ella era la destinataria en todas-. Juegos de café de una porcelana exquisita, libros, una cantidad enorme de libros: novelas, ficción, terror, grandes clásicos, poesías. Entre todos los objetos uno llamó mi atención, un reloj de péndulo sobresalía enclaustrado de forma rectangular dentro de un mueble de madera pulida y brillante con grabados dorados. A diferencia de todo lo demás, sobre aquella pieza el tiempo no había logrado hacer de las suyas. Se mantenía intacto, pulcro, sin polvo, ni rastro de vejez. Abrí la puerta alargada que ocupaba el espacio mas grande del mueble, su llave seguía unida a la cerradura como dos novios, estaba vacío. Ya me encargaría de llenarlo. El olor a pino embriagó mis pulmones, respiré profundo varias veces, cerré los ojos hasta lograr perderme en el sentimiento de paz que me llenó. A mis nueve años, aquel descubrimiento era lo mas osado e increíble que me había pasado.
Esperaba cada tarde que mi familia se acostara a hacer la siesta para subir con sigilo aquellas escaleras que me llevaban al cielo. Abría la puerta del reloj de madera y me acomodaba dentro, un lápiz y varias hojas sueltas me acompañaban en el pequeño espacio donde me acurrucaba. Encogía las piernas y recostaba mi espalda, subía lleno de caramelos, magdalenas o lo que hubiese encontrado en la cocina. Leí cada libro con una voracidad infinita, eran tantos que durante todas las vacaciones siguientes, siempre lograba encontrar nuevos ejemplares desperdigados en aquella madriguera de mis anhelos. Mi cabeza se llenaba de historias que escribía en aquellos pedazos de papeles.
The great-aunt kept an arsenal of incredible treasures: canes inlaid with marble and glass, a tape recorder, many vinyl records leaning against smaller ones, a gramophone, three radios framed in crazy designs, paintings of different sizes with faces, landscapes and my favorites with fruits - growing up I found out they were called Still Life - outfits I'd only seen in old movies, wigs, well- dressed dolls, letters, lots of handwritten letters tied with green velvet ribbons - she was the recipient in all -. Exquisite porcelain coffee sets, books, a huge number of books: novels, fiction, horror, great classics, poetry.
Among all the objects one caught my attention, a pendulum clock stood out cloistered in a rectangular shape inside a polished and shiny wooden cabinet with golden engravings. Unlike everything else, on that piece time had not managed to do its thing. It remained intact, neat, without dust or traces of age. I opened the long door that occupied the largest space in the cabinet, its key was still attached to the lock like a boy and a girlfriend, and it was empty. I'd take care of filling it out. The smell of pine intoxicated my lungs, I took several deep breaths, closed my eyes until I lost myself in the feeling of peace that filled me. At the age of nine, that discovery was the most daring and incredible thing that had ever happened to me.
I waited every afternoon for my family to go to bed for a nap so I could stealthily climb those stairs that would take me to heaven. I opened the door of the wooden clock and settled inside, a pencil and several loose sheets accompanied me in the small space where I huddled. I would draw my legs in and lay on my back, I would go up full of candies, muffins or whatever I had found in the kitchen. I read each book with an infinite voracity, there were so many that during all the following vacations, I always managed to find new copies scattered in that burrow of my desires. My head was filled with stories that I wrote on those pieces of paper.
Nunca le pregunté a la tía-abuela por esos objetos. Jamás leí, ni supe de qué iban sus cartas. Con el tiempo creo que ella me descubrió y por eso siempre encontré libros diferentes. En algunas reuniones familiares llegó a preguntarme con picardía si había disfrutado en su casa de la playa. Vivió ahí en su edad adulta. Entrada en años ya no pudo permanecer sola en este lugar, toda la familia la quiso cerca para cuidarla y así, su residencia quedó para vacacionar. Nunca se casó, jamás tuvo hijos. Visitaba su hogar veraniego tres veces al año y siempre con un familiar, le costaba caminar. Durante la universidad me escapaba solo a este lugar. Mis vacaciones a partir de ese momento tuvieron un olor y un anhelo diferente, añoraba que llegase agosto.
I never asked my great-aunt about those objects. I never read, nor did I know what her letters were about. Eventually I think she discovered me and that's why I always found different books. At some family gatherings she came to ask me mischievously if I had enjoyed it at her house on the beach. She lived there in her adult years. She was getting older and she could not stay alone in that place, the whole family wanted her close to her to take care of her and thus, her residence was left for holidays. She never married, never had children. She visited her summer home three times a year and always with a relative, she had trouble walking. During college I used to sneak out to this place by myself. My vacations from that moment had a different smell and longing, I longed for August to arrive.
¿Y ahora qué hacemos aquí papá?, no es verano- preguntó Ana con sus ojos curiosos. -No aparentaba los seis años que tenía, su inteligencia era vivaz. -¿Dónde están esos libros que leías?. Levanté la mirada y observé aquella casa. En invierno luce diferente, las alimañas se esconden durante el frío. La familia limpió la estancia semanas antes de la muerte de la tía. Quiso pasar sus últimos días en aquella morada. Bajo mi custodia dejó todo lo que escondía en el desván. -“Ella lo sabía, descubrió que yo subía”- dije en silencio y una sonrisa se dibujó en mi rostro. Mi hija continuaba sentada en una de mi piernas, sostuve sus manos y me levanté con ella. -¿Sabes por qué decidí escribir novelas?- le pregunté con tono cómplice. -¿Los libros te lo dijeron?- su mirada se hizo mas despierta.-Sí- respondí con orgullo acariciando sus cabellos. -Y ahora van a abrirte un mundo gigante a ti.-¿Seré escritora como tú?- repicó con ansiedad infantil.-Serás lo que quieras mi amor, pero lee siempre, nunca te canses de leer, un libro es un compañero fiel y atento- respondí feliz.-Vamos hija- nos dirigimos al segundo piso y nos detuvimos frente a la puerta, la abrí sintiendo saltar mi corazón, hacía mucho tiempo que había dejado de ir a “mi lugar”. El bombillo volvió a recibirme, los ojos de Ana brillaron con mas ahínco, la escalera nos dio la bienvenida, sentí que sonreía al verme. Era tiempo de pasar mi testigo de mano. Subimos tomados de la mano.

Where are those books you used to read? I looked up and saw that house. In winter it looks different, the vermin hide during the cold. The family cleaned the room weeks before the aunt's death. She wanted to spend her last days in that abode. In my custody she left everything she hid in the attic. -"She knew, she discovered that I was going up"-I said silently and a smile appeared on my face. My daughter was still sitting on one of my legs, I held her hands and got up with her.-Do you know why I decided to write novels? -I asked with an accomplice tone. Did the books tell you? Her gaze became more awake.-Yes- I replied proudly, stroking her hair. -And now they are going to open up a giant world for you-. -Will I be a writer like you?- She replied with childhood anxiety.-You will be what you want my love, but always read, never get tired of reading, a book is a faithful and attentive companion- I answered happily.-Come on daughter- we headed to the second floor and stopped in front of the door, I opened it feeling my heart jump, a long time ago I had stopped going to "my place". The light bulb welcomed me again, Ana's eyes shone brighter, the stairs welcomed us, I felt that it smiled when it saw me. It was time to pass my hand witness. We came up holding hands.
