Este es un escrito que narra, de manera breve, las palabras de un hombre viviendo en un mundo completamente destruido por un cataclismo nuclear. Él nos habla de su resolución y qué lo llevó a cambiar de opinión a último momento.

Corrían los tiempos en que la humanidad había dejado la superficie para vivir bajo tierra. Los vientos radiactivos eran un mal constante. La pequeña niña corría con todas sus fuerzas para llegar al punto de entrada, pero una nube de polvo le hizo perder el camino. El sensor en su muñeca no dejaba de sonar y alertar de que su tiempo bajo la radiación se agotaba…
Hizo un gran esfuerzo por intentar ver a través de aquella capa de polvo que quemaba, sí, que era como ácido sobre la piel. Al final, no pudo más y sus pies terminaron cediendo en medio de aquella tormenta de polvo, siendo aquel sensor lo único que continuó sonando en el silencioso desierto radioactivo. Era el único sonido que se escuchaba a kilómetros…
De eso han pasado 3 años. Me he dedicado a ayudar a todos los sobrevivientes de aquel cataclismo, causado por políticos egoístas que solo gobernaron para perjuicio de la misma humanidad. Yo era un simple alfarero, pero desde entonces me he visto en la obligación de trabajar en todo oficio que se requiera, incluso el de paramédico. Sin embargo, han pasado varios meses desde que la última vez que vi un ser humano vivo.
En el campamento subterráneo en el que vivía comenzó a filtrarse un líquido que contaminó toda el área y tuvimos que escapar. Muchos no sobrevivieron en la superficie, pero encontramos algunos túneles en los que nos hemos refugiado para disminuir el tiempo de exposición. De todos los que escapamos del refugio, solo quedé yo.
“Hoy, en medio de todo este polvo que quema, he querido dejar un par de notas antes de llevar a cabo lo que he decidido hacer. Mi vida ya no tiene sentido en este solitario paraje en el que todos dejamos de vivir para sobrevivir. No hay verde, no hay humedad, solo hay silencio y frialdad. Las sonrisas fueron reemplazadas por gemidos de dolor, por quejas, por agónicos gritos en la inmensa destrucción de una sociedad que rogaba por la paz, pero solo obtuvo destrucción…
De pie en este precipicio, se ve muy lejos mi destino, pero caeré rápido y llegaré en poco tiempo. Un paso y todo habrá terminado, un paso y todo será tranquilidad…”
Esas fueron las notas que escribí cuando casi tomo una decisión que pude haber lamentado en mi otra vida, si acaso existe algo así. Allí, de pie al borde del precipicio en el que planeaba acabar con el sufrimiento, sentí una pequeña mano tomando la mía.
Volteé hacia atrás, pero tuve que agacharme para observar bien, ya que mi traje no me permitía ver con claridad. Entonces lo vi, un pequeño niño con un traje protector mucho más avanzado que el mío. Estaba solo y en su muñeca también tenía un sensor radioactivo que, por ahora, estaba en silencio.
No sabía de donde había venido ese niño, pero sin conocerme había caminado hasta mi en medio de tanto polvo y tanta soledad. Sin saber quién era, de donde había venido, lo tomé en mis brazos y lo alejé de aquel lugar.
Quizás no pude encontrar a esa pequeña que escapó del refugio hace 3 años, pero quizás pueda ayudar a que este niño tenga una oportunidad en este mundo, la oportunidad que no pude darle a mi hija…

It was a time when mankind had left the surface to live underground. Radioactive winds were a constant evil. The little girl was running with all her might to reach the entry point, but a cloud of dust made her lose her way. The sensor on her wrist kept beeping and alerting her that her time under the radiation was running out...
He made a great effort to try to see through that layer of dust that burned, yes, that was like acid on the skin. In the end, he could no longer and his feet ended up giving way in the middle of that dust storm, being that sensor the only thing that continued to sound in the silent radioactive desert. It was the only sound that could be heard for miles...
Three years have passed since then. I have dedicated myself to help all the survivors of that cataclysm, caused by selfish politicians who only governed to the detriment of humanity itself. I was a simple potter, but since then I have been obliged to work in any trade required, including paramedics. However, it has been several months since I last saw a living human being.
In the subway camp where I was living, a liquid began to leak and contaminate the whole area and we had to escape. Many did not survive on the surface, but we found some tunnels in which we have taken refuge to decrease the exposure time. Of all of us who escaped from the shelter, only I remained.
"Today, in the midst of all this burning dust, I wanted to leave a couple of notes before carrying out what I have decided to do. My life no longer makes sense in this lonely place where we all stopped living to survive. There is no green, there is no humidity, there is only silence and coldness. The smiles were replaced by moans of pain, by complaints, by agonizing cries in the immense destruction of a society that begged for peace, but only obtained destruction...
Standing on this precipice, my destiny looks far away, but I will fall fast and I will be there in no time. One step and all will be over, one step and all will be tranquility... "
Those were the notes I wrote when I almost made a decision that I might have regretted in my other life, if there is such a thing. There, standing at the edge of the precipice where I planned to end the suffering, I felt a small hand taking mine.
I turned back, but had to bend down to get a good look, as my suit did not allow me to see clearly. Then I saw him, a little boy with a protective suit much more advanced than mine. He was alone and on his wrist he also had a radioactive sensor that, for now, was silent.
I did not know where that child had come from, but without knowing me he had walked to me in the midst of so much dust and so much loneliness. Without knowing who he was, where he had come from, I took him in my arms and took him away from that place.
Maybe I could not find that little girl who escaped from the shelter 3 years ago, but maybe I can help this child to have a chance in this world, the chance that I could not give to my daughter...
