En los comienzos de la historia resiente las hermanas palmeras, Mati y Palmita bailaban al son de la brisa de verano. Sus otras hermanas, sus tías, sus abuelas, bisabuelas, tátara abuelas y primas también lo hacían. Vivian a la orilla de la playa, bordeando toda la costa. Por las noches las palmeras reposaban y contaban cuentos de los muchos años vividos, terminaban las charlas diciendo que debían procurar vivir mucho tiempo.
Pasados los años prístinos de las palmeras, una mañana aparecieron los hombres blancos. A lo lejos, en el mar embravecido, se divisaban unas carabelas donde venían los conquistadores. No tardaron en llegar a la costa. Penetraron todos los alrededores de la playa. Mati le dijo a Palmita que pronto comenzarían los problemas. Este hombre blanco no era domésticos como los indios. Era fuerte, más testarudo, y traía consigo muchas armas metálicas letales.
Los conquistadores, luego de acampar por varias noches, iniciaron exploraciones hacia distintos lugares. Mati observó cómo talaron algunas de sus primas más cercanas para hacer espacio. Como por antojo derribaban sus senos para tomar el agua de coco. Provocaron incendios con sus fogatas y murieron otras tantas palmeras. Mati y Palmita no podían hacer nada, solo observaban todo esto desde el mismo lugar de siempre, ya que ellas no podían moverse.
Pronto pasaron muchas generaciones. Y los blancos volvieron, pero esta vez cargados de máquinas y contaminación. Construyeron un gran hotel. Acabaron con grandes áreas de cocotales. La familia de Mati y Palmita seguía muriendo. Solo ellas sobrevivieron, porque él espacio donde ellas estaban enraizadas eran los jardines de la casa grande del dueño del hotel. La esperanza de vida las sorprendió dándoles unos años más de vida, cuando ellas solo esperaban terminar secas y agobiadas por los desmanes de los visitantes.
La familia del dueño tenía un niño llamado Antonio, pero las palmeras Mati y Palmitas le llamaban Tony. Cada vez que el niño jugaba en sus pies, le dejaban caer cocos maduros con sumo cuidado procurando no golpearlo. La esposa del dueño, se percataba del hecho, agarraba al niño, y mandaba a extraerles el agua para dársela al niño. Aquello se volvió costumbre, tanto para la esposa como para las palmeras Mati y Palmita. Tony ya de grande no tardo en reconocer su suerte casi milagrosa, que no le cayera un coco en la cabeza. Pero Mati y Palmita sabían bien lo que hacían, más tarde se comprendería el trabajo que habían hecho por años.
El dueño blanco, tuvo muchos problemas con los indios. Pero también tuvo problemas con las noticias que llegaban de los administradores de la ciudad. Por lo que el hotel se vio en banca rota y cerró sus puertas. Los forasteros se fueron y el dueño blanco también. El hotel quedo deshabitado. Solo la casa grande subsistió, quedo habitada por la esposa y su hijo Antonio que ya estaba bien crecido.
Los años pasaron lentamente, Mati y Palmita lloraban por las noches extrañando las conversaciones de sus abuelas. La desolación era extrema. La brisa de la playa soplaba triste.
Una tarde Antonio regreso de la ciudad cargado de documentos acompañado por varios hombres blancos. Hablaron durante varios días.
Fue durante un atardecer de un viernes cuando se marcharon. Al día siguiente se fue la esposa del dueño y el personal de servicio. Las instalaciones del hotel se dejaron ver olvidados y repletos de maleza.
Mati le aviso a Palita que se oían cornetas de camiones en la avenida próxima al hotel. Se trataba de maquinaria pesada de construcción que venían a demoler las estructuras del hotel. Derrumbaron desde la primera hasta la última columna. Los camiones solían salir llenos de escombros y entrar vacíos, dispuestos a ser llenados de nuevo. Poco a poco la costa volvió mostrar toda su hermosura. El sonido del mar bravío se hizo ecos por todas partes.
Una mañana de sol radiante, habiendo terminado los constructores con la demolición, se aparecieron muchas personas en caravana de autos con retoños crecidos de palmeras. Tenían franelas de color verde. Venían dirigidos por Tony, dispuestos a sembrar y llenar toda la costa.
Mati y palmita se reían y jugaban con las plantas bebes, y todas las noches le repetían lo que decían sus ancestros, hay que procurar vivir mucho tiempo, porque los tiempos buenos siempre están por llegar.
Mati le preguntó a Palmita cuando tiempo lo quedaban, y Palmita le respondió no saberlo, pero lo que si sabía por información de sus abuelas era que las palmeras podían vivir hasta 700 años.
In the early days of the resent history the palm sisters, Mati and Palmita danced to the sound of the summer breeze. Their other sisters, their aunts, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, great-great-grandmothers and cousins did it too. They lived on the shore of the beach, bordering the entire coast. In the evenings the palms rested and they told stories of the many years they had lived, ending their talks by saying that they should try to live a long time.
After the pristine years of the palm trees had passed, one morning the white men appeared. In the distance, in the raging sea, some caravels where the conquistadors were coming could be seen. It did not take them long to reach the coast. They penetrated all around the beach. Mati told Palmita that soon the problems would begin. This white man was not domestic like the Indians. He was strong, more stubborn, and brought with him many lethal metal weapons.
The conquistadors, after camping for several nights, began to explore different places. Mati watched as they cut down some of their closest cousins to make room. As if on a whim, they would tear down their breasts to drink the coconut water. They started fires with their bonfires and as many palm trees died. Mati and Palmita could do nothing, they just watched all this from the same place as always, since they could not move.
Soon many generations passed. And the whites came back, but this time loaded with machines and pollution. They built a big hotel. They destroyed large areas of coconut groves. Mati and Palmita's family kept dying. Only they survived, because the space where they were rooted was the gardens of the big house of the hotel owner. Life expectancy surprised them by giving them a few more years of life, when they only expected to end up dry and overwhelmed by the visitors' excesses.
The owner's family had a boy named Antonio, but the palms Mati and Palmitas called him Tony. Whenever the boy played on his feet, they would carefully drop ripe coconuts on him, trying not to hit him. The owner's wife, noticing the fact, would grab the child and send them to extract the water to give it to the child. That became a habit, both for the wife and for the palms Mati and Palmita. When Tony grew up, he soon recognized his almost miraculous luck, that a coconut did not fall on his head. But Mati and Palmita knew well what they were doing, later they would understand the work they had done for years.
The white owner had many problems with the Indians. But he also had problems with the news coming from the city administrators. So the hotel was bankrupt and closed its doors. The outsiders left and so did the white owner. The hotel was left uninhabited. Only the big house survived, it was inhabited by the wife and their son Antonio who was already well grown up.
The years passed slowly, Mati and Palmita cried at night, missing their grandmothers' conversations. The desolation was extreme. The breeze from the beach blew sadly.
One afternoon Antonio returned from the city loaded with documents accompanied by several white men. They talked for several days.
It was during a Friday evening when they left. The next day the owner's wife and the service staff left. The hotel premises were left to look forgotten and overgrown with weeds.
Mati told Palita that she could hear the sound of trucks on the avenue near the hotel. It was heavy construction machinery coming to demolish the hotel structures. They demolished from the first to the last column. The trucks used to leave full of debris and enter empty, ready to be filled again.
Little by little the coastline showed all its beauty again. The sound of the raging sea echoed everywhere.
One bright sunny morning, the builders having finished with the demolition, many people appeared in a caravan of cars with overgrown palm shoots. They wore green flannels. They were led by Tony, ready to plant and fill the whole coast.
Mati and Palmita laughed and played with the baby plants, and every night they repeated to her what their ancestors said, you have to try to live a long time, because the good times are always coming.
Mati asked Palmita how long they had left, and Palmita replied that she didn't know, but what she did know from information from her grandmothers was that palm trees could live up to 700 years.
