Today's prompt image inspired me to explore what it means to be a machine in a completely different way. How would a girl like this react to learning she was not, in fact, a real girl? I used the InferKit Neural Network to automatically generate the text for me.
I gave the network a prompt based on the image: "That is when she realised, she was never really alive."
I let the neural network generate some text and spent 5 minutes editing it. Some of the text generated is completely random/repetitive/unrelated so it was removed, but nothing was added. Every word was generated by the machine and is shockingly touching and genuine. I hope you enjoy!
"Stop!" She said out loud.
She realised the line between this world and the real one wasn't as clean as she once thought. Her hand was still on mine.
I should have been sure, but in the end I couldn't be. I was sure in that moment that I had to help her. I would figure it out, and I would make it so she wouldn't have to feel this way ever again. I knew I would not be able to live if I lost her.
She was the only one I had, and I had to keep her safe.
"No one would have been any happier than I was if I had not woken up today," she spoke.
Her words didn't register in my mind. I didn't believe them. She felt sad to learn she as not alive. I don't know if she had ever truly realized she was alive in the first place. I was almost relieved for her.
She turned towards me, her eyes welling up again. I had said her name. She had noticed me. I could see her eyes flicker to mine. I didn't know what she saw, but it had made her smile. It had made her alive again.
She doesn't deserve this.
"Nika?"
The light was starting to fade.
"Nika..." I whispered. I saw her turn around to face the wall, her breathing becoming more shallow.
"I'm so sorry..." I closed my eyes. "I'm so so sorry..."
I waited for her to fall. She fell to her knees, her head hitting the floor with a dull thud. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't talk. My stomach started to knot. I was crying. I was crying so much.
I had lost her.
"No, please, Nika," I began, "I am sorry."
She continued to look down. "I'm so sorry..." I closed my eyes. "I'm so so sorry..."
I was losing my best friend. I was losing the person I could truly call my friend. I was losing the only person in the whole world I had ever loved. And I did not want to do that. I wanted her to keep smiling. I wanted to keep playing with her. I wanted to be here for her for as long as I could.
The light was completely gone.
