It was the night of their second year wedding anniversary. Fifty of Rosalind and Freeman Murphy's relatives and closest friends gathered to celebrate their accomplishment. The lavishly furnished, two-story home was everything that Rosalind desired. Of course, all couples struggle with finances and other aspects of their relationship at some point, she reasoned while approving the final touches for the event.
The day before the gala, Rosalind's friend visited to assist with last minute touches. All went well.
However, the night of the party caught her sitting at the vanity. She couldn't remember how long she stared into the mirror. A few seconds later, a knock at her bedroom door interrupted her thoughts.
Dabbing her face to apply the final layer of dark circle covering makeup, she looked perfect. With steadfast precision, she finished applying lipstick. But recalling her friend's visit ushered in a painful stab in the pit of her stomach.
Rosalind descended the staircase with the ease and grace that was her personality and style. A glowing smile capped off her entrance as Freeman met her at the bottom stair and escorted her into the large living room.
The crowd cheered amidst loud applause as though the couple had just won a relationship of the year award.
"They say if you make it past your first year, you've got a good chance at survival," one friend whispered to another.
"True, but if that time is fraught with anxiety, should one continue in hopes the next one will improve?" interjected Rosalind's sister with a sneer, who'd overhead the conversation.
Music and dancing ensued. The hour was late, and the party was winding down. Rosalind tapped her wine glass requesting quiet. The cake cutting ceremony was at hand.
Guests gathered close with no clue of the surprise event waiting.
Rosalind beckoned for Freeman to join her. She planted a lingering kiss, then led the smiling spouse toward the cake stand. Moments later, instead of using the knife to cut the cake, she turned and placed it on a side table as if to move it out of her reach.
She smiled, then turned her attention to the cake. Rolling up the sleeve of her evening dress, in a violent motion, she swiped the intricately designed pink and brown roses off the top, licked some icing that stuck to her hand, then proclaimed loudly, "that's some damn good frosting!"
Before anyone could react, she reached deep inside the center of the beautifully decorated, five-layered chocolate cake.
In one swift motion, she removed a remote control from the center of the cake then held it above Freeman's head. With the other hand, she wiped cake filling from the remote and pushed the ON button.
"Have you gone mad! What the hell?!" was Freeman's immediate response, coupled with embarrassment.
His wife had never acted in such a fashion. Quickly, he scoured the room hoping to salvage his reputation as he observed guests gasping at his wife's unexpected and uncharacteristic move.
Some stretched their necks to get a glance. Others jockeyed for position to see what the heck was going on.
The confrontation.
As unconventional as one could imagine or witness.

SourceEra la noche de su segundo aniversario de boda. Cincuenta de los familiares y amigos más íntimos de Rosalind y Freeman Murphy se reunieron para celebrar su logro. La casa de dos plantas, lujosamente amueblada, era todo lo que Rosalind deseaba. Por supuesto, todas las parejas luchan con las finanzas y otros aspectos de su relación en algún momento, razonó mientras aprobaba los toques finales para el evento.
El día antes de la gala, una amiga de Rosalind la visitó para ayudarla con los retoques de última hora. Todo fue bien.

Rosalind bajó la escalera con la facilidad y la gracia que caracterizaban su personalidad y estilo. Una sonrisa radiante coronó su entrada cuando Freeman se reunió con ella al final de la escalera y la acompañó al gran salón.
El público vitoreó entre fuertes aplausos como si la pareja acabara de ganar un premio a la relación del año.
«Dicen que si superas el primer año, tienes muchas posibilidades de sobrevivir», susurró un amigo a otro.
«Cierto, pero si ese momento está cargado de ansiedad, ¿debería uno continuar con la esperanza de que el siguiente mejore?», intervino con sorna la hermana de Rosalind, que había encabezado la conversación.
Siguieron la música y el baile. Era tarde y la fiesta se estaba acabando. Rosalind golpeó su copa de vino pidiendo silencio. Se acercaba la ceremonia del corte de la tarta.
Los invitados se acercaban sin tener ni idea de la sorpresa que les esperaba.
Rosalind hizo señas a Freeman para que se uniera a ella. Le plantó un beso persistente y luego condujo al sonriente cónyuge hacia el soporte de la tarta. Momentos después, en lugar de utilizar el cuchillo para cortar la tarta, se dio la vuelta y lo colocó sobre una mesa auxiliar como si quisiera apartarlo de su alcance.
Sonrió y volvió a centrar su atención en la tarta. Se subió la manga del vestido de noche y, con un movimiento violento, arrancó las rosas rosas y marrones de la parte superior, lamió el glaseado que se le había pegado a la mano y proclamó en voz alta: «¡Qué glaseado más bueno!
Antes de que nadie pudiera reaccionar, metió la mano en el centro de la tarta de chocolate de cinco pisos, bellamente decorada.
Con un movimiento rápido, sacó un mando a distancia del centro de la tarta y lo sostuvo por encima de la cabeza de Freeman. Con la otra mano, limpió el relleno del pastel del mando y pulsó el botón ON.
«¡Te has vuelto loco! ¿Qué demonios?», fue la respuesta inmediata de Freeman, acompañada de vergüenza.
Su mujer nunca había actuado así. Rápidamente, recorrió la sala con la esperanza de salvar su reputación mientras observaba a los invitados boquiabiertos ante el inesperado y poco característico movimiento de su esposa.
Algunos estiraron el cuello para echar un vistazo. Otros se agachaban para ver qué diablos estaba pasando.
