MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "a stray bullet".
....Crime is rampant in some areas; more than others due to a number of factors. People targeted, together with innocent bystanders are affected. Families torn apart. The criminals have little regard for human life as they pillage and plunder through life taking what is not theirs and harming those in their paths. It's a vicious cycle that appears to be never ending. I share a micro story along those lines.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 28 May 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2750: a stray bullet.
Below is my story:
Gray and unassuming, the utility vehicle begged for space near the curb where Mark Goodwin deposited the trash receptacle inches from the driveway. In a rush, he overlooked the passenger sitting in the back seat who'd canvassed his home.
Inside, Mark settled down to entertain his guests. Outside, noise rose from neighborhood children, including his talented son, Hayward, engaged in a game of basketball.
Within moments, shots rang out, followed by chaos, throughout the street.
The weapon that left Hayward unable to pursue his dream of a college athlete was definitely a stray bullet. At least that was the consensus circulating in the neighborhood after a reporter spoke to a witness that Saturday afternoon who'd stood opposite the house behind a barricade. Corroborating onlookers to the witness' account matched neither the time nor the details the witness provided.
Immediately after the terrifying incident that left one of Mark's friend dead and Hayward injured, a get-together was held two houses down. Alphonse studied the group known for spreading conspiracies. He cocked his head down and listened intently, weaving through the crowd for the perpetrator's description.
Luck favored him that day. Nothing to connect him, he eased away from the site, a sneer crossing his lips.
Later, Alphonso jumped to his feet. His chest rose and fell with rapid breaths as the police bombarded his apartment.
Unbeknown, the Goodwin's security camera caught the tail end of his accomplice's license plate as he backed into the driveway before speeding away from the crime.

Un sospechoso entre ellos
Gris y discreto, el utilitario mendigaba espacio cerca del bordillo donde Mark Goodwin depositaba el contenedor de basura a escasos centímetros de la entrada de su casa. Con las prisas, pasó por alto al pasajero sentado en el asiento trasero que había sondeado su casa.
Dentro, Mark se acomodó para entretener a sus invitados. En el exterior, se oyó el ruido de los niños del vecindario, entre ellos su hijo Hayward, que jugaba al baloncesto.
En unos instantes, sonaron disparos, seguidos de caos, por toda la calle.
El arma que dejó a Hayward sin poder perseguir su sueño de atleta universitario fue sin duda una bala perdida. Al menos ése era el consenso que circulaba por el vecindario después de que un reportero hablara con un testigo aquel sábado por la tarde que había permanecido frente a la casa detrás de una barricada. Los testigos que corroboraron el relato del testigo no coincidían ni con la hora ni con los detalles que éste proporcionó.
Inmediatamente después del aterrador incidente que dejó a un amigo de Mark muerto y a Hayward herido, se celebró una reunión dos casas más abajo.
