MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "not a treat".
...When I considered the word "treat", I immediately envision a decadent sweet dessert or any item that is pleasing I have on special occasions. Although my choices are now limited due to my Diabetes, I still remember the days in which I would indulge in bakery items and specialty foods I consider treats since I didn't consume them often. These items were reserved for special occasions. I also remember special dinners such as birthdays and anniversaries where I would order a lobster dinner and pecan pie for dessert. Yum, yum. Let me release this train of thought and continue with my story I want t share for the prompt.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 7 May 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2729: not a treat.
Below is my story:
Jared peered out his bedroom window. An apprehensive smile formed as he carefully watched Prissy chase an invisible playmate. Her white fur flapped in the morning breeze as she darted from one end of the yard to the other. Reaching for his cane, he eased down on the foot board bench. His leg ached, though not nearly as bad since leaving the hospital a month ago. He suppressed the urge to relive the altercation involving her that sent him to the hospital and badly injure his leg.
But he couldn't erase the events of the past year. Prissy, an exotic and captivating Maltese, pranced as though she owned her world. But her confidence caught the attention of Jared's next door neighbor, Alfred. Mate her with his breed of dog consumed him. Jared vehemently refused in part due to the unknown breed. He'd had already made arrangements for Prissy.
Alfred wouldn't accept Jared's refusal. His continued badgering led to being jailed for kidnapping and assault. But he'd be released soon and returning next door.
The altercation left both Jared and Prissy traumatized. Jared hoped the experience wouldn't dampen her friendly spirit. But he couldn't afford friendship.
Outside, he yelled, startling her, "Prissy, that is not a treat." She yelped, then whimpered and ran past him inside.
Jared checked his watch. Five minutes for her backyard outdoor play he allowed when not visiting the local dog park. Also, the moving van would arrive tomorrow.
Peace of mind in a new neighborhood. Hopefully.

Pero no podía borrar los acontecimientos del último año. Prissy, una exótica y cautivadora maltesa, se pavoneaba como si fuera la dueña de su mundo. Pero su confianza llamó la atención de Alfred, el vecino de al lado de Jared. Aparearla con su raza de perro le consumía. Jared se negó con vehemencia, en parte debido a la raza desconocida. Ya había hecho arreglos para Prissy.
Alfred no aceptó la negativa de Jared. Su continua insistencia le llevó a la cárcel por secuestro y agresión. Pero pronto lo soltarían y volvería al lado.
