El destino del pelotón estaba en sus manos. Después del último ataque enemigo quedaron aislados del resto de la tropa. En el Cuartel General no consideraban que habían logrado sobrevivir a la embestida. De no conseguir refuerzos para cubrirle la retirada antes del próximo ataque, serían aniquilados sin posibilidad alguna de resistir. Las municiones con que contaban, eran insuficientes para combatir por más de una hora.
El sargento se le acercó, una vez más, caminando encorvado para proteger su cuerpo dentro de la zanja que ellos mismos cavaran, días antes, en la dura tierra. En esta ocasión fue más rudo al recordarle que se quedaban sin tiempo para poder establecer el enlace. Terminaba cada frase con un improperio, buscando darle énfasis a lo que decía. El operador de radio presentía que era imposible lograr la comunicación, pero siguió aferrado al equipo repitiendo una y otra vez las mismas palabras como un autómata.
Cerca del mediodía comenzó el estruendo de la metralla enemiga. El objetivo era barrer con todo obstáculo que evitara su avance nocturno, más allá de la actual línea del frente. Conociendo su superioridad en hombres y en técnica de combate, estaban resueltos a avanzar antes que la situación pudiera cambiar. Posicionarse en la colina les daría una ventaja que no podían perder.
Los siete hombres que habían quedado del pelotón, tomaron sus posiciones en la trinchera en espera de la orden para comenzar a disparar. The ammunition they had was insufficient to fight for more than an hour.
The sergeant approached him, once again, walking hunched over to protect his body inside the trench that they themselves had dug, days before, in the hard earth. This time he was rougher, reminding him that they were running out of time to establish the link. He ended each sentence with an expletive, seeking to emphasize what he was saying. The radio operator sensed that it was impossible to get through, but he continued to hold on to the equipment, repeating the same words over and over again like an automaton.

Knowing their superiority in men and combat technique, they were determined to advance before the situation could change. Positioning themselves on the hill would give them an advantage they could not afford to lose.
The seven men who had remained of the platoon took up their positions in the trench, awaiting the order to begin firing. They had to save the limited park they had left to cause as much damage as possible to the enemy. The radio operator placed his rifle on the transmitter, without stopping repeating his call, drowned out by the echo of the opposing artillery.
The shell of an enemy tank hit next to the trench where one of the soldiers was. His body was destroyed. The sergeant gave the order to attack. The fire that came out of the trench surprised the men of the opposing advance guard. Some fell. The sergeant stood up recklessly and unloaded the comb of his rifle, accompanied by an overbearing cry of vengeance for the fallen comrade.
What followed was a hellish attack. There was little that handful of men could do against a well-armed battalion. The fire was concentrated in the direction of the entrenched men. The soldiers of the platoon fought to the last. Half an hour later, the tracks of enemy battle tanks were passing over the trench in their unstoppable march up the hill.
