Greetings All
After spending my day teaching and finally finishing feedback, it is time for an update. I hope all of you enjoy!
A device that seemed to amplify the internal energy of the person to whom it was given. The idea had been for it to be wearable, almost like armour, but that had failed miserably, and it took several weeks before new components could be made.
It had started with two pieces, one placed behind the heart, and another wrapped around the spine. The Kai were terrified of what an internal device would do and so, not willing to risk their own people, experimented on what they deemed lesser races.
It had been a success. With more power, the newly dubbed Champion had cornered the beast and ensured that it would remain locked away. The only thing gifted to it was the ability to still feed along the edges of dying universes through the power of the cage it was in.
Everything seemed to be going so well. There was peace, and the universe once more flourished, until the Champion’s body started being torn apart by the energy being created by the System. If only it had been madness and pain, it would have been easier to deal with, but the power. The raw, savage power that now ran unchecked in the Champion was an even bigger risk to the Dekai and their universe.
They couldn’t turn their creation out into the rest of the universes. No. That would show all living beings what they had done, unravelling the secret they had hoped to hide. They couldn’t risk that. But killing the Champion wasn’t possible. They were too strong, and their mind was gone. They were no better than the beast they had captured.
Only one choice was left. To feed the Champion to the creature now dubbed the Fell Dragon. The idea had seemed so simple. When the Dragon was sated, there were periods of rest. This wasn’t seen when it was feeding on the outskirts of the universe. Always hungry, always hunting. But when filled, the wasting disease diminished, and fewer deaths were reported by the Dekai.
If the Champion could be fed to the Dragon, then all their problems would disappear. It seemed like such a fool-proof idea. But like all fools, they overestimated their idea. Madness consumed the Champion, and it hardly put up a fight against the Fell Dragon released from its cage. Within heartbeats, the creature sacrificed to defeat the Dragon had been fed to it, and the beast would not return to the cage, starting its rampage once more. With a caveat, it was learning.
It now understood the flow of power. It understood the cage, its Masters, and those who pulled the strings from the shadows. It hadn’t just consumed the power of the Champion but also their memories. It knew that more would come and that it needed to grow. The disease spread to other universes.
The Heavenly and Dekai were at a loss. Not only would they be exposed, but they had once more released a creature hell bent on consuming every living thing in existence. That was when Shareik discovered Edzeeker. A brilliant-minded Dekai, who had been instrumental in the earlier development of the System. He had been the one to warn his superiors about the possibility of madness developing.
He had said the System was based on the Dekai anatomy and that any creature it was added to would burn up in a short amount of time. They needed to adapt their Champions to carry the System. He had been right, but no one listened until Sedeath had put his foot down and demanded that the beast be brought to heel. Little did the Dekai king know that that would mean in the future.
He had been unaware of the beast’s development, and he still didn’t know the full extent, but he knew there were those who worked on a way to capture it. The king didn’t want it captured. He wanted it dead, and Edzeeker, his loyal friend, worked endlessly to find a way to achieve this. It would take decades and even centuries for the outside universe to make a System that could be incorporated into a subject without complete madness taking over them. The only reason the Dekai managed to survive the attacks of the beast was because they had learned to direct it to other high-energy sources, planets.
Whole planets were being consumed within a handful of years as the scientists worked to create the System. The madness would still descend on those who survived the experiments, but they were more manageable now with the controller module. This was an extra piece of the System, normally placed at the base of the skull, which made the Champions more controllable.
However, it was hard to protect this piece of the System, and if at any point it was damaged, the Champion could lose control. Which made the Dekai make one more fatal mistake.
Fed up with the continued existence of their worst failure, they decided that it was time to end the madness. The Heavenly had tried to dissuade them, creating the favour system, and while many had been tempted by the power the Heaven wielded, stolen from the power the Dragon consumed, most were not.
The Fell Dragon had to die.
Well, that's one way of getting rid of your mistake. Sadly, it doesn't go the way it should. Too bad!
