It's Already Too Late
I opened my eyes and thought to myself "Holy shit, what... what happened...?"
My head was hurting like hell, as if I had been beaten up. There was blood dripping down my face.
I looked around, and I saw a tree trunk on my side. I can't believe it: the log fell right on top of me. Talk about being unlucky.
I sat there for a few minutes, trying to pull myself together. That's when I realized that the sun was already setting. "Stupid trunk. I probably spent a few hours unconscious on the ground."
I was still a long way from our base, and I definitely wouldn't be able to return to safety before the nightfall.
"It's already too late."
My only option would be to try to survive the night by myself. It's been a long time since someone was able to survive alone in the woods.
After analyzing my surroundings, I concluded that my best bet was to stay right here, in this clearing, where I could spot them before they attacked me.
I pulled my revolver from the holster, and lighted up my last cigarette.
They are coming.
