John was born in a small community, from a poor home and survival wasn't easy. His parents work so hard to make ends meet, at least just to see the next day.
I and John were very close friends, we even lived opposite each other. We were kids who only loved to play, eat and sleep.
It was a rainy day, the ground was wet and slippery, everyone was inside, away from the pouring rain. John went outside to play before it started raining, he waited a little in his friend's house for the rain to stop but it didn't.
So, John decided to go home enduring the rain, he knew his mom must be worried about him and he doesn't want to be whipped.
Just by the side of the road that leads to his house was a gutter big enough to engulf a child six years of age (if I could recall his age).
John kept running, he could see his house from a distance, at least I'm home (he must have presumed).
John knew the road so well, he knew there's a gutter just by the side of the road, but where is the road, where is the gutter, the whole place was flooded.
It was a rainy day and the ground was wet and slippery. John walked as if there were mines planted everywhere, his home was just a few steps away.
Ok! One step at a time he said to himself
The whole place was flooded, it was as if he was blindfolded. Mummy! John shouted as he slipped and fell into the gutter.
No one was around and John couldn't swim, so he drowned.
John, John his mom kept shouting, I could hear her from afar, I just got back from school to find out John was missing, we searched the entire neighborhood but he was nowhere to be found. John's mom was crying as if she knew her son was dead. I couldn't help it but cry with her.
The next morning John was found in the backyard floating in the water. It can't be my John, not our John, his parents cried out loud, I can't lose my friend, I cried within me.
It has been over 14 years since John died, but I still can't forget about him, he will always be in my heart forever.
