Tom was a simple man and liked things a particular way. He also spoke "Building" or "Concrenese" although he and the Library never could agree on spelling.
Being a superintendent sounded far too fancy to Tom so he always insisted people refer to him as the caretaker, which he felt described what he does much better.
"Now Sir I promise you that these stairs are perfectly safe," Tom replies to the Constable's inquiry. The police have been to the "Rampart Building" three times in the past year and are so baffled by the deaths that occur that they are now trying to blame stairs.
Tom made sure to huff incredulity as best as he could picture huffing that is. "Are you saying the apartment building is killing people, CONSTABLE?" followed with a huff. Tom thought that was a particularly good one, he could almost make out the air condensing.
"No Sir, we are merely looking into all possibilities. You must admit it is rather strange for so many 'accidents' to occur in one place." The constable says calm as a button over a pair of double D's.
Afterwards, pleased that for the most part that is exactly what the constable was implying, Tom strolled back to his room.
Lounging in his sun chair, and lighting a pipe, Tom speaks to the room which was not the only thing listening if you knew anything about buildings. "Now Roger. I do think you should be a bit more lenient on your running rule, this is not an old age home anymore you know."
A deep groan came from the wall and a smile-like crack appeared. "That was uncalled for Roger, but thank you," Tom replies.
After a couple of minutes, he collects his tools and shakes his head knowingly. "Bloody old buildings, they can be so spiteful sometimes."
