Reading this brutal letter from the president of Colombia:
*Trump, I don't like traveling to the USA. It's boring, but I confess that there are admirable things. I like to go to the black neighborhoods of Washington. There I saw a whole fight in the US capital between blacks and Latinos with barricades, which seemed silly to me because they should unite. I confess that I like Walt Whitman, Paul Simon, Noam Chomsky and Miller, and that Sacco and Vanzetti, who have the same blood as me, are memorable in US history. They were murdered in the electric chair for being labor leaders, by the fascists who are both inside the US and in my country.
I don't like your oil, Trump. He's going to wipe out the human race because of his greed. Perhaps, one day, over a glass of whisky, despite my gastritis, we can talk about it. But it's difficult, because you consider me an inferior race. I'm not. And no Colombian is. If you know anyone who's stubborn, it's me. They may, with their economic strength and arrogance, try to stage a coup d'état, as they did with Allende. But I will die in my law. I will resist torture and I will resist you.
I don't want slavers in Colombia, we've had plenty and we've freed ourselves. What I want on Colombia's side are freedom lovers. If you can't accompany us, I'll look for other ways. Colombia is the heart of the world, and you don't understand that. This is the land of yellow butterflies, of the beauty of Remedios, but also of the Aurelian colonels Buendía, of whom I am one - and perhaps the last.
You can kill me, but I will survive in my city that predates yours, in the Americas. We are people of the winds, the mountains, the Caribbean Sea and freedom.
You don't like our freedom, okay. I don't shake hands with white slavers. I shake the hand of the white libertarian heirs, of Lincoln and of the black and white peasant boys of the United States, at whose graves I cried and prayed on a battlefield, to which I arrived after walking through the mountains of Italian Tuscany and surviving Covid-19. They are the United States and before them I kneel, before no one else.
Overthrow me, President, and the Americas and humanity will respond.
Colombia now no longer looks to the north, it looks to the world. Our blood comes from the blood of the Caliphate of Cordoba, from the civilization of that time, from the Latin Romans of the Mediterranean, from the civilization of that time, which founded the republic, democracy in Athens. Our blood is made up of the resistant blacks you turned into slaves. In Colombia is the first free territory in America, before Washington, in all of America, there I take refuge in your African songs.
My land is from the goldsmiths who existed at the time of the Egyptian pharaohs, and from the world's first artists in Chiribiquete. You will never dominate us. The warrior who rode our land, shouting freedom and whose name is Bolívar, opposes us.
Our people are fearful, somewhat timid, naive and gentle, loving, but they will know how to conquer the Panama Canal, which you violently took from us. Two hundred heroes from all over Latin America lie in Bocas del Toro, now Panama, formerly Colombia, which you murdered.
I raise a flag and as Gaitán said, "even if I stand alone, it will continue to be raised with the Latin American dignity that is the dignity of America", which your great-grandfather didn't know, and mine does, Mr. President, an immigrant to the United States.
Your blockade doesn't scare me; because Colombia, as well as being the country of beauty, is the heart of the world. I know that you love beauty as much as I do, so don't disrespect it and it will give you its sweetness.
Colombia is open to the whole world as of today, with open arms we are builders of freedom, life and humanity. I have been told that you have put a 50% tariff on the fruit of our human labor to enter the US, and I do the same. May our people plant the corn that was discovered in Colombia and feed the world.*
SourceI wonder how the American (northern) mind has been working about what America is. It's nothing new, it's a well-worn theme. Something we can even see in Residente's simply ecstatic clip "This is not America", which should be mandatory in any Latino's audiovisual repertoire. And speaking of Latinos, this is exactly where I want to hit the nail on the head. I don't really know what the consequences will be of this whole process of expulsion that the current government has been carrying out (apart from the obvious loss of labor), but what I do know is that it's very tiring to see a North American say: This is America. Because he's wrong. America is a whole continent, it's made up of slices that you can't even conceive of from the heights of your first world.

And if so, can you understand that this is wrong today? Or does it still sound nonsensical and unimportant? I'm a mere ant struggling to survive in an obscure corner of southern Brazil, far from any efficient capitalist axis, living on crumbs practically. I've always dreamed of going abroad to become someone with financial dignity and expanded knowledge. I always thought about Canada, but life took other turns and I never went for it. My mind, however, has never stopped expanding, I may never have left the place physically, but mentally I'm there, here and there. I have a lot of luck that you don't have, but a lot of bad luck that you don't have either.

Esta é a terra das borboletas amarelas, da beleza de Remedios, mas também dos coronéis Aurelianos Buendía, dos quais sou um – e talvez o último.
Você pode me matar, mas eu sobreviverei na minha cidade que é anterior à sua, nas Américas. Somos pessoas dos ventos, das montanhas, do Mar do Caribe e da liberdade.
Você não gosta da nossa liberdade, ok. Eu não aperto a mão de escravocratas brancos. Aperto a mão dos herdeiros libertários brancos, de Lincoln e dos meninos camponeses negros e brancos dos Estados Unidos, em cujos túmulos chorei e rezei num campo de batalha, ao qual cheguei, depois de caminhar pelas montanhas da Toscana italiana e sobreviver à Covid-19.
Eles são os Estados Unidos e diante deles eu me ajoelho, diante de mais ninguém.

A Colômbia agora deixa de olhar para o norte, olha para o mundo, o nosso sangue vem do sangue do Califado de Córdoba, da civilização daquela época, dos romanos latinos do Mediterrâneo, da civilização daquela época, que fundou a república, democracia em Atenas. Nosso sangue tem os negros resistentes transformados em escravos por você. Na Colômbia está o primeiro território livre da América, antes de Washington, em toda a América, lá me refugio nas suas canções africanas.
A minha terra é da ourivesaria existente na época dos faraós egípcios, e dos primeiros artistas do mundo em Chiribiquete.
Você nunca nos dominará. O guerreiro que cavalgou nossas terras, gritando liberdade e cujo nome é Bolívar, se opõe.
Nosso povo é temeroso, um tanto tímido, é ingênuo e gentil, amoroso, mas saberá conquistar o Canal do Panamá, que você nos tirou com violência. Duzentos heróis de toda a América Latina jazem em Bocas del Toro, atual Panamá, antiga Colômbia, que você assassinou.
Eu levanto uma bandeira e como disse Gaitán, “mesmo que fique sozinho, ela continuará a ser hasteada com a dignidade latino-americana que é a dignidade da América”, que o seu bisavô não conhecia, e o meu sim, Senhor Presidente, um imigrante nos Estados Unidos.
Seu bloqueio não me assusta; porque a Colômbia, além de ser o país da beleza, é o coração do mundo. Eu sei que você ama a beleza como eu, não a desrespeite e ela lhe dará sua doçura.
A Colômbia está aberta ao mundo todo a partir de hoje, de braços abertos somos construtores de liberdade, vida e humanidade.
Me informaram que vocês colocaram uma tarifa de 50% sobre o fruto do nosso trabalho humano para entrar nos EUA, e eu faço o mesmo. Que nosso povo plante o milho que foi descoberto na Colômbia e alimente o mundo.*
SourceEu me questiono como é que vem funcionando a mente americana (do norte) à respeito do que é a América. Não por acaso isso não é nenhuma novidade, é um tema já batido. Coisa que podemos inclusive ver no simplesmente extasiante clipe do Residente "This is not America", que deveria ser obrigatório no repertório audio visual de qualquer latino. E falando em latino, é exatamente aqui que eu quero tocar na ferida. Eu não sei realmente quais serão as consequências de todo esse processo de expulsão que o governo atual tem executado (ah não ser a óbvia perda de mão de obra trabalhadora), mas o que eu sei é que é bastante cansativo ver um americano do norte dizer: This is America. Porque ele está errado. A América é um continente inteiro, é composta por fatias que você nem consegue conceber aí do alto de seu primeiro mundo.

Ou na cabeça de vocês (nascidos nos Estados Unidos da América), sempre foram educadas a compreender o seu país como "A América"? E caso a resposte seja positiva, vocês conseguem compreender que isso está errado hoje em dia? Ou ainda soa non-sense e pouco importante? Sobre leis de imigração e tudo isso eu nem tenho como querer me meter, sou uma mera formiga lutando pela sobrevivência em um obscuro canto do sul do Brasil, distante de qualquer eixo capitalista eficiente, vivendo de migalhas praticamente. Sempre sonhei em ir para fora para me tornar alguém com dignidade financeira e conhecimento expandido. Eu sempre pensava no Canadá, mas a vida tomou outros rumos e acabou que nunca fui atrás. Minha mente porém nunca parou de expandir, eu posso nunca ter saído do lugar fisicamente, mas mentalmente eu estou lá, aqui e acolá. Tenho várias sortes que vocês não tem, mas muitos azares que vocês também não tem.
