I want my books to stand on their own in terms of the quality and specific plot, but as you know, all of my work up to this point have connections to each other. Often they didn’t start out that way, but again, as I’ve discussed before, I’m not in control of this; I am just the chronicler of the adventure.
I do have some other writings that may never reach publication; mostly those deal with taboo subjects that are not generally acceptable to discuss but are more prevalent in the world than people are willing to admit. I don’t know if other authors enjoy exploring socially forbidden subjects, but I find them to be an excellent source of character-study and a sincere challenge to see if, as a writer, I can make the implausible seem completely likely.
Who knows, perhaps this answers another question I have been asked, if I have ever thought of publishing my work under a pen name. The use of a pseudonym does offer a writer the advantage of exploring subjects that might conflict with his or her image and brand, while maintaining a ‘safe distance,’ so to speak. There are forums that offer readers and writers a place to come together to explore different genres of taboo subjects. One of those that I have seen has tens of thousands of readers and probably about 1,000 authors. Some of those writers seem to have profoundly excellent skills and I have suspected that they publish there under the cover of anonymity so as to protect their other work.
So far I have not ventured into publishing in that realm; rather I have used these other writing opportunities to sharpen my skills and develop my ability to explain a subject in a way that bridges the gulf between what is socially acceptable and the reality of human life, where the unacceptable is often true. Shakespeare wrote all of the stories, whether it was him or others publishing through him. Young love and tragic demise, incest, and political intrigue were all there for his public to study. I wonder if he experienced social stigma when he wrote Hamlet Act 1, Scene 5, where the ghost of Hamlet’s father tells of being murdered in an incestuous plot to gain the throne of Denmark. Incest was not entirely needed in order to tell the story of betrayal, but he chose to include it as a commentary on the fact of the times in Europe. Similarly, when Sophocles wrote Oedipus, we might wonder that the subject was not seen as particularly scandalous. In some modern-day cultures, and in ages of old, relationships between family members was common and readily accepted. Even today in many places of the world, this is a common practice, if not socially accepted. However, I digress; no, I have not published any work under another name and have no current plans to do so.
