In the last presidential term, the confidence in the system was very high. Everything seemed to go well but as the term came to close, the confidence was shaken up. The Alliance party was broken and a new party was formed. However, the common Mwananchi still decided to put their wavering confidence and hope in the upcoming system, believing in a brighter future – until June 2024.
The remaining confidence and hope was completely uprooted. It all started with the Finance Bill. The common Mwananchi was not happy, these were not the promises they voted for, and nothing was being done to address their concerns. They had to speak out, so they took to the streets. Streets that ended up killing many of our youth, simply for having a voice. A peaceful protest, painted the streets red.
Under a system that promises freedom of expression, through abductions, they were silenced. The very system our forefathers fought and died to liberate, was the same system calling the shots on the abductions and deaths of fellow Wananchi. It is tragic that a system whose motto is "service to all" is the same system that kills over trivial matters.
'Will the confidence in the system be repaired?' Maybe, maybe not! But even with the Swahili proverb, 'Maji yakimwagika hayazoleki (spilled water cannot be collected)', I still believe that it is every Mwananchi's prayer that someday, that confidence will be rebuilt.
