I meet people every day over the phone at work. Some people are hard to talk to. I know this is business and I'm here to help you solve issues and complete the task I'm paid to do, but some people come onto my phone and I immediately feel a kinship. There may be something personal about their problem which I have experienced before, or even currently experience, like migraine. I identify with their suffering and we develop this tiny relationship on a call that I take with me through my day and sometimes beyond. I'm human, too.
Sometimes people question if I'm a robot. At times I have words I've repeated so often I sound a bit robotic, but I promise, I'm flesh and blood. The next time you are calling customer service, you may want to heed some advice: treat that person as though they are human, and recognize they can help, if you let them, and if you treat them respectfully, you may get over and above your expectations. We don't get paid for that part. You play into how well you're treated.
