Today is one of those days. I woke up exhausted and with a very sore back, thanks to having slept on the sofa. It's incredible to be in my own home and feel that nothing I touch is mine. Why are marital fights so disastrous? Sitting here in my office, away from her chaos, I can still feel her judging gaze on my back. With everything and that we yelled at each other as a morning greeting, at least she had the decency to pack me some cookies for the day. She knows how much I enjoy sweets.
It's already 10 a.m., and the late-night is taking its toll on me. Already the screen in front of me stopped making sense. Now it's just a swirl of stressful numbers. Why the hell would I have wanted to be an accountant? How different would my life be if I had followed my dream of singing? Although, maybe it's not too late, right? I better spend the bad drink of so much existentialism with a cup of coffee and some of those delicious cookies, which seem somewhat different from the ones she always makes me.
While I eat, I think about making a decision. It's time to open up to Rosie and tell her about my love affair with the artist I met a month ago at the bar. It's not fair to her, and it's not fair to me; besides, she is already too suspicious. Her attitude of making a mess for every little thing gives her away. Hey, these cookies are so good, what do they have? I feel a tingling in my mouth as I chew, is it cinnamon? Cardamom?
I've already eaten nine of the 20 or so cookies that Rosie packed for me. The tickling is already being quite annoying, plus my nose is running. It must be that I'm going to get the flu, the cookies are too good to be the culprit. I still have about five left, I keep eating because you only live once. I wonder what the secret ingredient is. The sweet taste reminds me of Laura, the dancer. How beautiful she is, and how delicious she tastes. I remember her in her bed, opening for me.
As the blood drifts towards my crotch, I feel a growing tightness in my throat. I bring my hands to my neck and try to ask for help. I can hardly breathe anymore. Slouching over the chair, I fall to the floor next to the table. In a moment of epiphany, I understand what's happening. Rosie has put in my cookies some of the salty peanut butter she only buys for herself. I'm allergic to nuts!!! Am I dying???
In one last effort, I exhale a cry of despair, a high note that sounds like my failed dream as a singer. Laura... I'm not breathing anymore.

Hoy es uno de esos días. Me he despertado exhausto y con la espalda muy adolorida, gracias a haber dormido en el sofá. Es increíble eso de estar en mi propia casa y sentir que nada de lo que toco es mío. ¿Por qué las peleas maritales serán tan desastrosas? Sentado aquí en mi oficina, lejos de su caos, aún puedo sentir su mirada juzgadora clavada en mi espalda. Con todo y que nos gritamos hasta desgañitarnos a manera de saludo matutino, al menos tuvo la decencia de empacarme algunas galletitas para el día. Ella sabe lo mucho que disfruto el dulce.
Ya son las 10 a.m. y el trasnocho me está pasando factura. Ya la pantalla frente a mí dejó de tener sentido, ahora solo es un remolino de números estresantes. ¿Por qué demonios habré querido ser contador? Qué distinta sería mi vida si hubiera seguido mi sueño de cantar. Aunque, quizás no es demasiado tarde, ¿verdad? Mejor paso el mal trago de tanto existencialismo con una taza de café y algunas de esas deliciosas galletitas, que parecen algo diferentes a las que siempre me prepara.
Mientras como, pienso en tomar la decisión. Es hora de sincerarme con Rosie y contarle de mi amorío con la artista que conocí hace un mes en el bar. No es justo para ella y no es justo para mí; además, ya sospecha demasiado. Su actitud de hacer lío por cada mínima cuestión la delata. Oye, pero qué buenas están estas galletas, ¿qué tendrán? Siento un cosquilleo en la boca a medida que mastico, ¿será canela? ¿Cardamomo?
Ya me he comido nueve de las aproximadamente 20 galletitas que Rosie empacó para mí. El cosquilleo ya viene siendo bastante molesto, además de que me gotea la nariz. Debe ser que me va a dar gripe, las galletas están demasiado buenas como para ser las culpables. Aún me quedan unas cinco, sigo comiendo porque la vida es una sola. Me pregunto cuál será el ingrediente secreto. El sabor dulce me recuerda a Laura, la bailarina. Qué hermosa es, y qué rico sabe. La recuerdo en su cama, abriéndose para mí.
En pleno desviarse de la sangre hacia mi entrepierna, siento una estrechez creciente en mi garganta. Llevo las manos hacia mi cuello y trato de pedir ayuda. Ya casi no puedo respirar. Encorvándome sobre la silla, caigo al piso al lado de la mesa. En un momento de epifanía entiendo lo que sucede. Rosie le ha puesto a mis galletas un poco de esa mantequilla de maní salada que solo compra para ella. ¡¡¡Soy alérgico a las nueces!!! ¿¿¿Me estoy muriendo???
En un último esfuerzo, exhalo un grito de desesperación, una nota alta que suena como mi sueño fallido de cantante. Laura… Ya no respiro.
