The Allotment Dream is a poem I wrote a few years ago when I put my back out during the summer growing season. This disc injury, which I originally sustained over 15 years ago, has come back to haunt me on numerous occasions over the years… often leaving me house-bound for months at a time despite the aid of strong pain killers for the first month.
This poem was written in that tripped out state of mind, somewhere between pain and lucidity, where prescription pain killers leave you spinnging out. This is a strange land of half-dreaming while waking, where anxiety dreams often manifest during night time’s fleeting sleep.
Anyway, I don’t want to go too much more into detail because a poem should speak for itself, but rest assured this wasn’t written yesterday in response to a current injury 😉 although I re-wrote and edited it yesterday to improve it to the point I was happy to publish.
All the pictures were taken at the allotment yesterday though, where the tomato plants I managed to get planted (a little late) are doing well in the greenhouse.
I happened along on this poem a few days ago and it reminded me of how it is important to feel gratitude for the times when we’re not limited by health or other issues. As I’ve written about my chronic health condition many times on hive and even recently, I won’t go on about it here again 🙃
Although this poem is strange and surreal, perhaps even a little psychedelic, it seems like a positive poem to me. A reflection on different states of mind, and a reminder to live more fully in the moment and not allow worries of about the future or past to ruin what is now!
Beyond all that esoteric mumbo-jumbo I think it is a fantastic journey poem, one that takes the listener/reader into the dream world of that moment in my life.
