Rune Blog

Stockholm was once the site of many Viking-era settlements, and many rune stone monuments remain, especially in the city of Sigtuna.　The Viking Age began in 700 A.D. and lasted for about 300 years, till 1000 A.D., when Christianity spread and expanded in northern Europe. It is fun for me to blog about rune stone inscriptions that were made over 1000 years ago. How would the Vikings feel that a foreign expat write about their history and rune stone monuments? lol!

Sigtuna is a town with a very relaxed atmosphere, which I love and often visit.　It is located near a lake that connects to the sea, which I feel is appropriate for a town that traded with other countries during the Viking Age when ships were heavily used.

The spread of Christianity is said to have been later in Northern Europe than in other European regions, spreading between the 8th and 12th centuries.　The inscription on the rune monument, "May God bless you," suggests that it was erected after the spread of Christianity.

As the plaque introducing the rune stone inscription states, it is believed that he was the protector of the trading interests of the region by constituting the guild of Frisians inscribed on the stone inscription.　Nevertheless, the plate lightly looks down on Þorbjôrn due to his clumsy carving skills, who is the stone monument artist of the time who designed this runic stone monument and engraved the runic letters. I think this design is fine and I like it. It's not cool to criticize artwork that was created more than 1000 years ago, right? Haha!

By the way, Þorbjôrn (Thorbjork) and Thorkell are still very common names in Sweden today. And, it's very amazing to know that these names have been used for more than 1000 years in this region. Okay, let's watch "Vinland Saga", one of my favorite animated films about the Viking Age! There are Thorkell and Thorbjorn in it! ( )

ルーン石碑ブログ

ストックホルムはかつてヴァイキング時代の多くの集落があった地域で、特にSigtuna シグツゥーナ市を中心にたくさんのルーン石碑が残っています。　ヴァイキング時代は西暦７００年からはじまり、キリスト教が北欧に伝播し拡大していった西暦１０００年ぐらいの３００年間をさす言葉だそうですが、１０００年以上に作られたルーン石碑を現代のわたしがこうしてブログを作成するのは楽しいことだなと感じています。 趣味程度にちょくちょくルーンブログも更新できたらと思っています。

Sigtuna（シグツゥーナ）はとても落ち着いた雰囲気のある町で、わたしも大好きでよく遊びに行く町です。　海につながる湖が近くにあり、船を多用し他国と交易をしたヴァイキング時代の町にふさわしい立地だと感じます。　今では高級住宅地になっています。　しないから少し離れたところにはエリート育成の寄宿舎もあります。

キリスト教の伝播は他の欧州地域に比べ、北欧は８世紀から１２世紀にかけて拡がったとされていて、他の欧州地域に比べれば伝播は遅かったとされています。　このルーン石碑には「神の加護がありますように」と刻まれていて、キリスト教の伝播あった後に建立されたと推測されます。

このルーン石碑を紹介するプレートにもあるのですが、石碑に刻まれたFrisian（フリジア）のギルドを構成することで、この地域の交易利益を守った人だったと考えられているようです。　それにしても、プレートでこのルーン石碑をデザインしルーン文字を刻んだ当時の石碑アーティストの Þorbjôrn トールビョルク さんをかるくディスっていて、１０００年前のアーティストも現代になってディスられるってどうよ？ってすこし苦笑してしまいました。 デザインが乱雑だとしているのですが、わたし的には悪くないデザインだと思うのですが、どうおもいますか？　 石碑に刻まれている、トールビョルクもトルケルも現代でも使用されている男性の名前です。　１０００年以上にわたって愛された名前なんだなと感慨深く石碑を眺めました。
