Throughout this long journey through Argentina and exchanging work for accommodation in different hostels, I experienced and learned many new things. All these experiences gave me the opportunity to get to know each place in more depth and to have more time for sightseeing on a low budget. In an overall balance, I would say that all my exchanges were good, but some were better than others. As for the trips, of course one organises oneself to have the best time, but this is even better when the person who is offering you the exchange also collaborates to make it happen. This is something you don't see in absolutely all the exchanges offered, so you have to know which one to accept and which one not to 🙃.
En todo este largo viaje recorriendo Argentina y haciendo intercambios de trabajo por alojamiento en distintos hosteles, viví y aprendí muchas cosas nuevas. Todas estas experiencias me dieron la oportunidad de conocer cada lugar más en profundidad y contar con más tiempo de paseo a un bajo presupuesto. En un balance global, diría que todos mis intercambios fueron buenos, pero algunos los fueron más que otros. En cuanto a los paseos, por supuesto que uno se organiza para pasarla de la mejor manera, pero esto es aún mejor cuando quien te está ofreciendo el intercambio también colabora para que así sea. Esto sí que es algo que no se ve en absolutamente todos los intercambios ofrecidos, así que hay que saber cuál aceptar y cuál no 🙃.
Entering the world of voluntary work in hostels is relatively easy: besides the desire to travel and see new places, you need time and of course a financial means to manage your daily expenses. In this exchange you work a few hours a day cleaning, cooking breakfast or welcoming guests, in exchange for accommodation and some food. When planning a long trip, accommodation is one of the most expensive things, so replacing this with a few tasks in a hostel can save a lot of money. There are apps that allow you to find which hostels work with this modality, but in my case I ask directly through social networks and that's how I managed to go to all the places I've been to 😃.
Entrar en el mundo del trabajo voluntario en los hosteles es relativamente fácil: además de ganas de viajar y conocer nuevos lugares, se necesita tiempo y por supuesto que un sustento económico que te permita manejarte con los gastos diarios. En este intercambio lo que se hace es trabajar algunas horas por día en tareas de limpieza, armado de desayunos o recepción de huéspedes, a cambio del alojamiento y algo de comida. Cuando se planea un viaje largo, el alojamiento es una de las cosas más costosas, así que reemplazar esto por algunas tareas en algún hostel permite ahorrar bastante dinero. Hay aplicaciones que te permiten encontrar qué hosteles trabajan con esta modalidad, pero en mi caso yo pregunto directamente por redes sociales y así conseguí ir a todos los lugares en los que estuve 😃.
A big debate about volunteering is about working time. As it is an unpaid job, it cannot be for many hours per week. In my opinion, the ideal is not to work more than 25 hours a week, which I can distribute in any way, but ideally it should be 5 days of 5 hours. Honestly, I always prefer more hours in the same day to have more days off, but it depends on what you need in each hostel. In the first volunteering I did, I worked up to 30 hours a week, but as I became firmer in my decisions, I never accepted to work more than 25 hours because it seemed too much 🙃.
Un gran debate respecto a los voluntariados es en cuánto al tiempo de trabajo. Al ser un trabajo sin remuneración económica, no puede ser de muchas horas a la semana. En mi opinión, lo ideal no es trabajar más de 25 horas semanales, que por mí pueden estar repartidas como sea, pero lo ideal es que sean 5 días de 5 horas. Honestamente siempre prefiero que sean más cantidad de horas en un mismo día para tener más días libres, pero esto depende de qué necesiten en cada hostel. En los primeros voluntariados que hice he llegado a trabajar hasta 30 horas semanales, pero a medida que me fui poniendo firme en mis decisiones, nunca más acepté trabajar más de 25 horas porque me parecía demasiado 🙃.
Another debate that revolves around this is the kind of work they make you do. As it is unpaid work, they are not supposed to make as many demands on you as in a paid job. Precisely, the concept of ‘volunteering’ implies voluntary collaboration with the tasks to be done, as a kind of assistance to the real workers on site. However, in practice, this is not so true, as I have come across hostel owners who demanded cleaning like a five-star hotel, or other owners who leave you in charge of the whole establishment because they are absent for the whole day. With time I also learned not to let myself be exploited in this way, as I do this type of exchange for pleasure and not out of necessity.
Otro debate que se gira en torno a esto es el tipo de trabajo que te hacen hacer. Como es un trabajo no remunerado, se supone que no deberían exigirte tanto como en un trabajo que sí es pago. Justamente, el concepto de "voluntariado" implica colaborar voluntariamente con las tareas a hacer, como una especie de asistencia a los verdaderos trabajadores del lugar. Sin embargo, en la práctica esto no se cumple tanto, ya que me ha tocado cruzarme con dueños de hosteles que te exigían limpieza como de hotel cinco estrellas o otros dueños que te dejan a cargo de todo el establecimiento porque se ausentan durante todo el día. Con el tiempo también aprendí a no dejarme explotar de esta manera, ya que este tipo de intercambios lo hago por gusto y no por necesidad.
To date, I have been in seven different establishments where I have done these work-for-housing exchanges. Overall, the one I liked the most was the one I did in a hostel in Cafayate, in the province of Salta. This place is run by a young couple in their 40s who spent most of their 20s and 30s travelling around the world, doing different exchanges like these until they settled down and decided to have their own hostel. The fact that they have been volunteers makes them have a great empathy with those who come to their hostel wanting to do this type of exchange. This was reflected both in the exchange time (25 hours a week in 5 days of work and two days off, with rotating schedules to be able to enjoy mornings and afternoons) and in the tasks they made us do, which were more of help while they themselves also worked 😃.
Hasta el día de la fecha, me tocó estar en siete establecimientos diferentes en donde hice estos intercambios de trabajo por alojamiento. Haciendo un balance global, el que más me gustó fue el que hice en un hostel de Cafayate, en la provincia de Salta. Este lugar es administrado por una joven pareja de unos 40 años quienes pasaron gran parte de sus 20 y 30 viajando por el mundo, haciendo distintos intercambios como estos hasta que se asentaron y decidieron tener su propio hostel. Que ellos hayan sido voluntarios los hace tener una empatía muy grande con quien llega a su hostel queriendo hacer este tipo de intercambios. Esto se veía reflejado tanto en el tiempo de intercambio (25 horas semanales en 5 días de trabajo y dos libres, con horarios rotativos para poder disfrutar mañanas y tardes) y en las tareas que nos hacían hacer a nosotros, que eran más de ayuda mientras ellos mismos también trabajaban 😃.
It was in that hostel that I felt most comfortable because we all worked together to get the job done, without anyone being more overloaded with work than anyone else. In addition, the owners regularly organised group meals, to which they invited us without charging us anything, which also made me realise that they really have that travelling spirit and hostel life that I like to find in every place I go to. My stay in this hostel was only for two weeks, but it was more than enough to get to know the surroundings of Cafayate and also to have good travel anecdotes. Now, every time someone asks me to recommend a volunteer hostel in the north of my country, I recommend this one, because good experiences deserve to be spread 💕.
En ese hostel fue en el que más cómoda me sentí porque entre todos sacabamos el trabajo adelante, sin que nadie esté más cargado de trabajo que otro. Además, los dueños organizaban comidas grupales regularmente, a las que nos invitaban sin cobrarnos nada, lo que también me hizo dar cuenta de que ellos en verdad tienen ese espíritu viajero y de vida de hostel que me gusta encontrar en cada lugar al que voy. Mi paso por este hostel fue solo de dos semanas, pero fue más que suficiente para recorrer los alrededores de Cafayate y también para tener buenas anécdotas de viaje. Ahora cada vez que alguien me pide recomendación de un voluntariado en el norte de mi país sin dudas recomiendo este, porque las buenas experiencias merecen ser divulgadas 💕.
